Friday Practice Report, Charles Cross returns to practice and Sam Darnold throw for the first time

The Seahawks received a double dose of good news on Friday. Tackle Charles Cross practiced after missing the Wednesday and Thursday practice sessions.  Quarterback Sam Darnold threw for the first time on Friday.  The throwing of the football was part of  Darnold’s carefully crafted, executed rehabilitation plan for his oblique muscle.

“Like I said earlier this week, just having a really good rehab process, the guys in the training room do a really good job with everybody, myself included. We’re just taking it day by day and making sure I do all the things I need to do to get ready for Sunday, said Darnold after Friday’s practice.

Darnold injured the muscle during the practice week leading up to the team’s 41-6  Divisional Playoff win over the Niners.  As a precautionary measure, Donald did not participate in the early pregame warm-ups and instead threw inside the Seahawks’ locker room at Lumen Field. The game plan worked to near perfection, with Darnold completing 12 of 17 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown. More importantly, Darnold survived two sacks, showing that he had endured hard hits.

BLIND SIDE HELP

The return of Cross is definitely good news for Darnold and the rest of the Seahawks offense. Cross injured his foot in the fourth quarter of the Niners’ playoff game. The injury was thought to be minor when Cross participated in the team’s Wednesday walkthrough.  Wednesday’s post-practice injury report listed Charles Cross, Josh Jones, and Amari Kight as non-practice participants. The report raised some eyebrows.

On Thursday, all three players missed practice, elevating the Seahawks’ left tackle position a downright concern leading up to Sunday’s game. Cross started the first  14 games of the regular season and was inactive the last three before returning for the Niners’ playoff game.

“ He is a leader and a calming influence in the huddle,” said right guard Anthony Bradford. “  The way he practices and prepares for every game is inspiring.”

ACCORDING TO SCHEDULE

When Cross hit the practice field on Friday, the concerns and fears subsided. Head coach Mike  Macdonald made it clear in his post-practice interview that Cross would be available to start on Sunday.

“Yeah, Charles (Cross) practiced today, and same thing, he’s getting better. He should be able to play, said Macdonald. As for Jones, he practiced for the first time on Friday, but the news was not so good for Kight, who missed his third straight practice.
