Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet has been ruled out for Sunday’s NFC Championship game against the Niners, and the Super LX should the Seahawks advance, with a significant knee injury. Head coach Mike Macdonald revealed the news during his weekly Radio Statio on Seattle Sports 710 and later confirmed the news during his weekly media briefing.
Charbonnet suffered the injury during a run in the second quarter of Saturday’s game with the Niners after nine offensive snaps, five of which were rushing attempts for 20 yards. Ken Walker had the lion’s share of the Seahawks’ running players and finished the game with 19 attempts for 116 yards and three touchdowns. Velicious Jones filled in for Charbonnet and finished the game with six attempts for 10 yards.
BREAK OUT SEASON
Charbonnet was having a breakout season, setting career highs in rushing yards (730), rushing attempts (184), and rushing touchdowns (12). Charbonnet is the first running back since Marshawn Lynch in 2014 to record double-digit rushing touchdowns in a season.
SEAHAWKS HAVE OPTIONS
The Seahawks have several options for replacing Charbonnet. Walker is the only running back listed on the 53-man roster. Jones and Cam Akers are on the practice squad and will now play a bigger role in the run game.
“That’s part of the reason we brought them here, is to provide great running back depth. Both are really good players in their own right, and they got a great opportunity in front of them. You hate it to be under these circumstances, but it is what it is. We’ve got to move forward. So they’ll be ready to go,’ said Macdonald.
George Holani was placed on the injured reserve list in November with a hamstring injury, but has not been designated to return to practice.
