The benefit of earning the No. 1 seed in the NFL is a bye week. With the playoffs starting this weekend, the Seahawks head coach and his assistants have the luxury of creating with the players’ time while waiting for their next opponent in the divisional round.
“ The guys were in today, really to put the game to bed, and then, they’ll be off tomorrow, said Sid Macdonald during Monday’s weekly press conference .”We’ll have a good workday on Wednesday and Thursday, and then the players will have a few days off, and we’ll be back rocking on Monday. It’s a little tricky because you don’t know what day you’re going to play, and you’re not sure who you’re going to play yet. So, there’s a balance of trying to stay ready, stay sharp, but also be able to take advantage of the opportunity we have to take care of our bodies and get as fresh as possible.”
OPPORTUNITY FOR SELF SCOUT
Until they know who their opponent is, Macdonald will use the practice to self-scout.
“It will be a combination of some things we need to see, some ways we’ve been attacked, and then really just try to go out and play really great, clean Seahawk football, just executing and running our stuff and trying to stay sharp, “said Macdonald.
In the self scout Macdonald will look at the positives and areas in which the team can make improvements based on the teams identity on both sides of the ball.
DEFENSE HAS BEEN STELLAR.
The defenses put forth a dominating performance against the Niners, holding their high-powered offense to just 173 total yards. Entering the game, the Niners were the best third-down conversion offense in the league. Continual pressure, solid tackling, and rush and coverage technique limited the Niners to just two third conversions on nine attempts. Another improved area by the defense has been limiting explosive plays.
“One of the things that I think we’re most proud of our defensive tape is the waves of Seahawks that get to the ball. What that does is it allows you to take really aggressive angles. So, I don’t feel like I’m just playing by myself out there,’ said Macdonald .”I feel like our team is really committed to playing in that style, at that speed, and with that level of effort. When you do that, you might miss a tackle here or there, but it’s going to get cleaned up, and you’re going to get multiple people at the point of attack where you can limit some of those extra hidden yardages.”
RUN GAME HAS COME TO LIFE
On the offensive side of the ball, the Seahawks’ run game has come to life. In their last three games against the LA. Rams ( 171yards), Carolina ( 163 yards), Niners 180 yards) The Seahawks have rushed for a total of 514 yards, averaging 171 yards per game. The double threat of Ken Wallker III and Zach Charbonnet has kept defense guessing not only who will get the ball but how they will feature in the run play. What has expanded the Seahawks’ run plays has been the development of the screen game. Walker’s ability to run into space and break tackles has greatly improved the Seahawks’ ability to keep defences guessing
“Screen game coming to life. There you go. What did it take? Well, we wanted to be better at it, worked on it every day. It’s great, it’s a really important part of our offense and we called them in some good times. Klint (Kubiak) did a great job of calling them and the guy’s execution,” said Macdonald .” I feel like has really taken steps. It’s kind of been like one thing or another throughout the course of the season and I felt like we’ve finally really been aligned on some of those plays. So, it’s great to get the screen game off the ground.”
