The Washington Huskies (9-4, 1-1 in conference) took on the Indiana Hoosiers (10-3, 1-1 in conference) to reopen conference play. The Huskies came into Sunday’s game winners of three of their last four. The Hoosiers also had won three of their past four games. When the two teams tipped off in Bloomington, the game turned into a high-scoring affair. Despite a decent shooting night for the Huskies, Indiana’s tempo and three-point shooting were too much to overcome.
Washington tries to keep up in a fast-paced first half
The first four minutes of the game saw a frantic pace, with Indiana and Washington trading baskets and not stopping until the first media timeout, with a 15-all scoreline. The Huskies worked to keep pace with an uptempo Hoosiers’ squad by using a balanced scoring attack. Quimari Peterson led the team with 11 points, followed by Desmond Claude and Zoom Diallo, who each had eight. Hannes Steinbach also chipped in with seven points. Washington as a team shot 54.8% from the field in the first 20 minutes of play in the high-scoring first half, but still could not keep up with Indiana.
Huskies unable to slow down the Hoosiers’ offense
Washington held Indiana’s primary scoring guards Tucker Devries and Lamar Wilkerson in check early (as each of them combined for just 10 first-half points). However, the Huskies did not have an answer for G Tayton Conerway. The Hoosiers’ senior guard shot a perfect 5/5 from the field and made 4/4 three-point attempts, while scoring a team-high 18 first-half points. With the help of Conerway and a fast pace of play, the Hoosiers shot 66.7% from the field as a team and took a commanding 52-40 lead into halftime.
Washington pulls close early in the second half, but cannot complete the comeback
An emphasis on stifling defense saw the Huskies reel off a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the second half. Franck Kepnang had two big blocks as Washington appeared to have figured out Indiana’s offense. However, the Hoosiers put the Huskies on their heels again by pushing the tempo. Indiana used a fast-paced offense to outscore Washington 24-13 over the next seven minutes of action. Lamar Wilkerson led the way for the Hoosiers with 18 second-half points. Washington responded, earning the majority of its points from the foul line. The Huskies made 21 of 24 free throws in the half. Hannes Steinbach, Desmond Claude, and Zoom Diallo led the charge for the Huskies. The trio combined for 31 of Washington’s 40 second-half points. Unfortunately, the effort was not enough as the Huskies fell 90-80 to the Hoosiers.
BIG TAKE AWAY
Three-point shooting was the difference in the Huskies’ frustrating defeat
Perimeter shooting has been problematic for Washington lately. The Huskies came into this game making just 9/51 three-point attempts in their last three games. Washington shot just 6/21 from the perimeter, hitting just 29% of attempts from deep. On the defensive end, the Huskies struggled to defend the three-point line as the Hoosiers shot 43% from beyond the arc. Indiana was 12/28 from deep, outscoring Washington from the perimeter 36-18. For the Huskies to earn a split on this road trip, their three-point shooting must improve. Washington’s next game is Wednesday against the fifth-ranked Purdue Boilermakers in West Lafayette, Indiana.
