Huskies enter their second bye week as Jedd Fisch holds a presser

Fresh off a 42-25 win over Illinois on Saturday, Husky head coach Jedd Fisch was in a good mood, as his team enters another bye week. Fisch spoke at his weekly Monday press conference about the Illinois game and provided an injury update. The Dawgs head into their bye week with momentum and the opportunity to rest up before entering the stretch run of the season.

The Huskies’ wide receivers have a big day against Illinois.

WR Denzel Boston earned Big Ten co-offensive player of the week honors after his career day against Illinois. He had a career high of 10 catches for 153 yards and had a touchdown catch. Boston also threw for a touchdown on a trick play before halftime. This is the fifth time a Husky player has earned Big Ten offensive player of the week honors this season. RB Jonah Coleman and QB Demond Williams were Big Ten offensive players of the week twice already this season.

WR Dezmen Roebuck continues to impress

Two of WR Dezmen Roebuck’s three catches on Saturday went for touchdowns. He has become one of Demond Williams’ favorite targets to throw to behind Denzel Boston. On Monday, Fisch talked about Roebuck’s growth as a receiver this year:

“He’s going really well. You know, he’s a young freshman that came in the summer. He wasn’t even here in the spring. He’s the only receiver I believe that didn’t come early… But that being the case, I think it’s pretty special. Seeing what he’s been able to do since he’s gotten here. And we put him in a lot of positions to have to do a lot of different things. You know, when you put him outside, we put him, we motioned him across, we put him in the backfield and motioned him out, we’ll continue to do that, and his growth has been great.

It’s been fun to watch him. He’s got tremendous hands. We’ve always known that. He’s got great body control and balance. We saw that on the corner route that he caught and stayed in bounds. We saw the physicality he plays with on the scramble touchdown that he made. And I think Dez will continue to just get better and better and better.”

Dezmen Roebuck has been an important part of the Huskies’ offense this season. He has filled in nicely for the injured Rashid Williams as Washington’s second leading receiver. For the year, Roebuck has 24 catches for 394 yards and four touchdowns. His productivity and skills as a receiver will be exciting to watch as his growth continues.

The Huskies get the left side of their O-line back

Washington had not played with its entire starting offensive line since week five against Ohio State. LT Carver Willis and LG John Mills returned from injury, making an immediate impact. For Fisch the returning starters brought back stability and experience.

“I would say that we felt, obviously, that having the two guys that were the starters and have earned the right to be the starters all season long, who were out for the last four weeks, brought you know, some consistency and brought some energy and did a great job of helping solidify what I believe our whole offensive line had their best game.”

The impact of those two players on the left side was immediately felt. The Huskies’ running backs had their highest combined yards rushing in a game since week four, as the offensive line opened up running lanes. With Jonah Coleman leading the way with 75 yards rushing, the most yards he had rushed for since week two against UC Davis. Washington’s offensive line also did not allow any sacks and gave Demond Williams a clean pocket throughout the game.

Washington will have more players back after the bye

The Huskies have played with injuries throughout the season, but are almost back to full health. TE Quentin Moore is expected to return next week from a head injury. Although Zach Henning filled in nicely at tight end this past week, having Moore back is huge. Moore is the Huskies’ best blocking tight end, and he will add to an offensive line that is now back to full strength.

Huskies expect a key receiver to return against Wisconsin

WR Rashid Williams has been out with a collarbone injury since week two. He has been working his way back and is expected to return to play against Wisconsin next week.

“Yeah, I think exceptionally well. I think we have made a big point of emphasis and always make sure that anybody that’s ever been injured in our program, we have a group that meets with our sports psychologists and make sure that we do a great job of keeping everybody positive, making sure that we always emphasize that anybody that has an injury, we have that group always going,” said Fisch .”

“We have an opportunity for guys to always stay healthy and happy and be involved. Rashid has been very involved with the team, never missed you know, anything we did. So he’s just getting ready and stronger and I think that’s a really cool opportunity for him to come back after surgery. And I think he’s ready to roll.”

Having Rashid Williams back will give the Huskies’ receiving corps another weapon in an already explosive group. Before his injury, Williams had five catches for 54 yards and was Demond Williams’ second-favorite target. Rashid Williams last played in week two against UC Davis and has missed the last six games. Getting him back will be awesome to see when Washington takes on Wisconsin.
