The Seattle Storm has reportedly hired Sonia Roman as their new head coach to replace Noelle Quinn. Raman was an assistant coach for the New York Liberty last season . The Liberty parted ways with then head coach Sandy Brandello, who was recently hired as the new head coach of the Toronto Tempo. Before her stint with the Liberty, Raman was an assistant for the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies from 2020-2024
History-making hire
With her hire as the Storm’s head coach, Raman becomes the first Indian-American coach in WNBA history and the first to serve a an NBA assistant coach. Raman started her coaching career at MIT, where she was the head coach from 2008-2020. She led the Division III school to two Tournament appearances and remains the winningest coach in program history
NOELLE QUINN RECORD
Seattle fired coach Noelle Quinn three days after the team lost to the Las Vegas Aces in Round One of the WNBA playoffs on September 21st. In her five years with the Storm, Quinn was 97-87. After firing Quinn, Storm general manager told ESPN last Month that the team was looking for a leader who could establish a team identity.
“I think we’re looking for a leader, someone who can manage a group and really establish a new identity,” Seattle general manager Talisa Rhea told ESPN last month. “There’s a lot of uncertainty, and we’re entering a new chapter, just kind of leaguewide, so excited for someone to really be able to put their mark on a team and build confidence, build team chemistry and build an identity on the court that will ultimately lead us to trying to compete for years to come.”
