Suarez’s grand slam puts the Mariners one win away from the World Series.

Seattle Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez’s second home run of the game caused a seismic quake from 46, 758 fans cheering his unbelievable feat. The bottom of the 8th inning grand salami gave the Mariners a  6-2 lead that seized the moment back to the Mariners in their topsy-turvy series with the  Toronto Blue Jays.  With the win, the Mariners lead the best-of-seven series  3-2, with the next two games to be played in Toronto.

Saurez gives the Mariners the  lead

Its only fitting that Suarez finished what he started. His solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning gave the Mariners the one-zero lead. The Mariners’ hitters struggled after Suarez’s home run, in part due to some strong pitching by  Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman. Gausman was stellar in the  5. In 2/3 innings he pitched, allowing one earned run, on three hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

With Gausman dealing and a   2-1 lead, the  Blue Jays looked as if they were going to win all three games at T-Mobile Park.  Luis Varland relieved   Gausman and continued to keep the Mariners’ bats silent in his 1.1 innings of work.  The Mariners, to their credit, stayed patient but were unable to string consecutive hits to trouble  Varland.

 Door opens for the Mariners.

The Mariners’ fortunes changed in the bottom of the eighth inning when  Jays Manager John Scheider  Varland with   Brendon  Little. Carl Raleigh opened the inning with a solo shot to tie the game and bring the Mariner faithful to their feet.

“I was just looking for something in the middle of the plate and was able to get good bat to ball to it,” Raleigh said. “I thought I got it good. Obviously hit it really high. You never know in this building. Luckily today the roof is closed. We’ll take it.”

Back-to-back walks to  Jorge Polanco and Josh Naylor chased  Little out of the game. Seranthony  Dominguez was brought in to stem the tide. The tide turned into a tidal wave when Dominguez loaded the bases by hitting Randy Arozarena. With bases loaded and the Mariner faithful yelling and screaming, Suarez sent them to Nirvina with the grand slam.

“ I was just trying to put the ball in play and not do too much, “ said Jaurez . “ The emotion was there, the crowd was there. I have been waiting for this opportunity my whole life. The moment is special, to be able to do this in front of my family , my teammates, and the fans is very special.  “

Historic swing brings hope.

Suarez’s grand slam was the second in the Mariners ‘ postseason history. Edga Martinez hit the first Mariners Grand Slam in game four of the 1995 ALDS against the New York Yankees.  The Mariners will travel back to Toronto, where they won the first two games of the series. In current 2-3-2 format , teams winning  Game  5 at home to take a 3-2 lead out on the road have won the series  20 of 33 times.
