Jason Myers game winning 52 yard field goal gives Seahawks a dramatic win over a stubborn Arizona Cardinals team

The Seahawks started fast, faded in the middle, and finished strong in their dramatic 23-20 win over the Cardinals, improving their season record to 3-1. The win keeps pace with the undefeated San Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks defense recorded two interceptions , one by Ernerst Jones and Coby Bryant six sacks, and seven quarterback hits.

“ We did not play our best game, and there is plenty that we will learn from. Having said we found a way to win,” said head  Coach Mike Macdonald. ” In Week One, we did not find a way to win, so this is an improvement.”

A dominant first half by the Seahawks defense put the team in the driver’s seat to start the second half with a 14-3 lead. The offense started the second half with a field goal that extended the lead to 17-3, and it looked as if the Seahawks were well on their way to an 8th consecutive win over the Cardinals.  Looks were deceiving as the Seahawks’ offense became stagnant due to several self-inflicted wounds.

ARIZONA STAYS CLOSE

Back-to-back punts by both teams gave the ball back to the Cardinals, who were gaining momentum with the crowd on their side.  Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray’s 16-yard pass to Marvin Harrison Jr. put the ball at the Seahawks’ 32-yard line, and the Cardinals’ offense began to find its rhythm. Back-to-back sacks by  Josh Jones and Devon Witherspoon were followed up with another split sack by  Ernest Jones and Leonard Williams, which forced the Cardinals to settle for a field goal. The field goal gave the Cardinals belief with the score at 17-6.

SEAHAWKS SELF-DESTRUCT

The Seahawks offense had a chance to extend the lead and grab the momentum back on their side. The intent and will were there. What was lacking was execution and playing smart football. On the next drive, which looked to have stalled on a Darnold sack on  3rd-4 at the Arizona 47-yard line. A holding penalty on  Cardinals safety Jalen  Thompson gave the Seahawks a first down and new life to extend the drive on first and goal from the seven.

Jaxson Smith-Njigba’s reception brought the ball to the Cardinals 42 42-yard line.  Back-to-back runs by Ken Walker put the ball on the Cardinals’ seven-yard line.  A nifty touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet was called back after a holding call on JSN. Another run by Walker put the ball on the   Cardinals ‘ eight-yard line. Before Darnold and the offense could the next play, tight end Eric Saubert was called for a false start, and the Seahawks had to settle for a 31-yard field goal, which gave them a 20-6 lead.

CARDINALS MAKE A COMEBACK

Murray and the Cardinals employed a no-huddle, uptempo offense that put the Seahawks’ defense on its heels.  A defensive holding penalty on Riq Woolen placed the ball on the Seahawks’ nine-yard line.  Uchenna Nwosu recorded his second sack of the game, but it was a temporary setback for the Cardinals, who scored on the next play. Harrison Jr snatched Murray’s perfectly floated pass over  Witherspoon for the 16-yard touchdown.

SEAHAWKS FAIL TO SEAL THE DEAL

Holding a 20-13 lead with 5:50 left in the game, the Seahawks had another chance to close out the game on its next offensive possession.    A 16-yard pass completion from Darnold to Smith-Njigba on third and four put the Seahawks in prime position to extend the lead and close the deal. Myers’ 53-yard field attempt was wide right and gave the Cardinals hope and belief with 3:16 left in the game.  A determined and focused Murray  connected with running  back Emari  Demeracdo for the game-tying touchdown  with  33 seconds left in the game

SPECIAL TEAMS TO THE RESCUE

For the second straight game, the Seahawks have benefited from the opponent’s lack of execution on special teams.  Cardinal kicker Chad Ryland’s kickoff was short of the landing zone, which placed the ball on the Seahawk 40 40-yard line.  Darnold completed a 22-yard pass to Smith-Njigba, which placed the ball on the Cardinals’ 3838-yard line.

“ I had no doubt we were going to go down there and score, honestly, and them’ making a huge penalty that  got us on the 40 yard line and there’s that,’  said Smith-Njigba. “You know, Jason’s going to go down there and seal the deal for us, “

Charbonnet’s bull ran up the middle, gained four yards, which put the ball in Myers’ range.     Myers did not waste his second shot at redemption and drilled the ball through the upright for the game-winning 52-yard field goal.
