The Sounders’ glorious 3-0 League Cup Final win over Inter Miami seems a decade ago, after three winless games by Rave Green. A 2-2 draw to the LA Galaxy was followed by a 3-1 loss to Inter Miami, which was followed by a 2-1 loss to Austin FC. Seattle bolted to 2-0 lead in the Galaxy game and unexplicably allowed the LA to claw back for the draw. In all fairness, the Sounders never had a chance against a team seeking revenge in the 3-1 loss to Inter Miami. The 2-1 loss to Austin left more questions than answers.
NOTHING TO SHOW FOR EALY DOMINANCE
The Sounders dominated the possession battle in the opening first half hour but had nothing to show for their work. Albert Rusnák and Cristian Roldan had early chances in the 31st and 37th minutes that went begging. The homeside took the lead in the 42nd minute after finding a foothold in the game. After blocking a pass by Jackson Ragen, Diego Rubio beat the Sounders defender in the chase for the loose ball and scored to give the 1-0 lead.
SOUNDERS FIGHT BACK
The visiting Sounders showed some bite back when, just 35 seconds into the second half, Danny Musoviski’s pass found a sprinting George Minoungou, who blasted the ball into the far post for the equalizer. The game became a case of almost but not enough, as each team had chances to take the lead but was unable to deliver. Obed Vargas 20 20-yard strike in the 54th minute sailed wide after a 50-yard slalom through the midfield. Jordan Morris nearly played super sub, but both of his shots were saved by Austin’s goalkeeper, Brad Stuver.
Stuver denied Morris in the 60th and 71st minutes. Stuver got his team in the game when he denied snatching the ball from an on-rushing Jesus Ferreira in the 82nd minute and saved Minoungou’s shot from crossing the goal line in the 86th minute.
ANOTHER LET GAME COLLAPSE
It looked as if the two sides would split the spoils after Andrew Thomas made a diving save to his left to deny CJ Fodrey. Looks were deceiving. In the sixth minute of stoppage time, Fodrey headed the ball across the goal mouth to an open Myrto Uzuni, who slotted home the game winner for the homeside. The biggest question is, can the Sounders regroup now that they are at the business end of the season and have a rivalry game against the Vancouver Whitecaps?
A secondary question, probably bigger than the first, is who Brian Schmetzer will pick as his starting line-up. With just four games left in the season, it is highly unlikely Schmezter will have a rotation lineup as the team looks to roll into the playoffs on a high note
