Edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu passed his physical on Sunday, clearing a significant step in his return to the team’s lineup. The passing of the physical test means Nwosu is soon to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list. When that is, the team is not sure, but it is confident it will be very soon.
“It’s exciting, because to my knowledge, we’re ahead of schedule, which is cool. I know Uchenna (Nwosu) has been working his tail off, which is par for the course for him. Our training staff had a great plan, guy has done a great job’ said Head coach Mike Macdonald. “He’s going to be back with us. We have a plan to ramp him up here over the course of the rest of training camp, going into the first game, and give us the option to possibly get out there early in the season.”
MAKES SENSE THAT THE TEAM IS TAKING A CAUTIONARY APPROACH
The team is taking a cautious and prudent approach on the return of Nwosu. When healthy can be of the teams top defense players. In his first season with the Seahawks in 2022, Nwosu led the team with a career high 26 quarterback hits, which tied him for 9th in the NFL. Nwosu finished the year with 9.5 sacks, which tied him with Darrell Taylor for the team lead. In 2023, he recorded a career-high 2.0 sacks and a second fumble in the Seahawks’ game against the Giants on September 24th.
After starting the next two games Nwosu was placed on Injured reserve with a pectoral injury . In 2024, Nwosu suffered a sprained MCL in preseason and missed the first four games of the season returned for one game and missed the next seven games with a quad strain. After participating in a career low six games Nwosu had off-season knee surgery
NOT SO FAST
Despite Nwosu’s progress, Mike Macdonald was quick to point out that the team has a specific schedule they are adhering too. Wether that means a return by week one is too early to tell.
“It’s probably too early to come to any conclusions, but we have a preliminary timetable that gets us around the beginning of the season. There’re some checkpoints we have to hit along the way. The first thing is to do an individual, going through walk through, staying sharp mentally, he’ll be ready on all that, but we have to get through that first.”
ADDED TALENT TO EDGE RUSHER UNIT
A healthy Nwosu would be a tremendous boost to the Seahawks edge unit of Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, and De Marcus Lawrence.
“I think you felt it in the Minnesota game, that was probably his best game last year, probably when he felt his best. Uchenna (Nwosu) is a leader for us on defense. He’s a great edge player on early downs. He’s got physicality. He’s incredibly smart. He’s got a great feel for the game, so, activating on those pass rush opportunities in the play action game, he’s really good at. Then on third down he can run inside and outside, he’s a great game runner. He’s got great chemistry with guys like Leo (Williams) and obviously he plays hard, so a lot of boxes right there. He’s a heck of a player, “ added Macdonald when asked about Nwosu’s impact on the defense.
