STUDS AND DUDS From Seahawks  23-23 tie with the Las Vegas Raiders

The return of Pete Carroll, Geno Smith, and Jamal Adams is now complete. The Seahawks and Raiders played to a 23-all tie. Shout out to the NFL for no overtime in the preseason. As for the game itself, there were plenty of positives for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll and his staff.

SOLID START BY THE OFFENSIVE LINE

The offensive line shuffle continued with Jalen Sandel at center, Grey Zabel and Anthony Bradford at the guard positions, and Abe Lucas and Josh Jones at the tackle position.  Give credit to the interior five for setting an early physical tone. The Seahawks rushed for 68 yards in the first quarter, were 3-4 on third down, and held the ball for 9:11 seconds. In addition to the 68 rushing yards, the Seahawks had 54 passing yards for a total of 122  offensive yards.

HERE ARE SOME PLAYERS WHO HAD OUSTANDING PERFORMANCES

STUDS

GEORGE HOLANI

There is no doubt  Holan cemented his position as the number three behind  Ken Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.  His seven carries for 61 yards and 24 yard touchdown down the right side showed he can get the tough yards and run wide when called upon to do so.  Adding to his versatility was his one catch for 20 yards. Behind Holan and nipping at his heels is rookie Damian  Martinez, who had six carries for 10 yards.

TORY HORTON

Horton continued to impress in the game as he has done during training camp.  He was targeted seven times with three receptions for 31 yards and  10 10-yard spinarama touchdown. He showed his versatility with one punt return for five yards and had one fair catch. Horton is in a heated battle for the backup position behind Jaxson Smith-Njigba with Marquez Valdes-Scantling.  His performance on Thursday night gave him a leg up on  MVS and  Dareke Young for the moment.

GREY ZABEL

If anyone has lived up to the hype, it has been  Zabel. A  starter during training camp, Zabel did not miss a beat starting his first NFL game.  He was solid in pass blocking and run blocking. He handled the Raiders’ Max Crosby on several pass blocks in the first quarter.

JOSH JOBE

Jobe  was in the right place in the right place for his first interception of the preseason. When he was in one-on-one coverage with Raiders wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr, he came up big. Raiders quarterback Aidan O’ Conell was under duress, rolled out, and underthrew Thornton Jr. The ball landed into Jobe’s waiting arms for the interception. Jobe finished the night with one tackle. His positioning and pass defense put him in the conversation for the backup cornerback position behind  Devon Witherspoon.

DUDS

DREW LOCK

Lock struggled early in the game but found his rhythm timing late in the second quarter. On the Seahawks’ first drive, Lock threw an interception on third and ten to the Raiders’ Isaiah Pola-Mao.  On the Seahawks’ next possession, Lock engineered a 10-play 75-yard drive that was capped by a George Holani 23-yard run.  On the drive, the Seahawks were evenly balanced with five run plays and five pass plays. On the Seahawks’ next possession, Lock fumbled the snap from center, resulting in a 19-yard loss, which resulted in the team punting the ball.

Lock showed his inconsistency on the team’s next drive. A George  Holani 20-yard run followed back-to-back battered passes.  Locke then completed a 31-yard strike to Dareke Young for 31 yards.  On third and six, Locke deftly dumped a pass to  Tory Horton, who executed a perfect double spin into the endzone.

On his last drive of the game, which was right before half, Locke engineered 12 12-play drive that ended with a Jason Myers 48-yard field goal. Locke’s final numbers were 12/22, 147 yards, one TD, and one interception for a 71.6 rating.

CODY WHITE

White was having a solid training camp until the emergence of Horton. With Horton getting more opportunities, White’s reps with the second team decreased. While his effort was consistent, there was a lack of big plays in the team scrimmages—the lack of opportunities transferred to Thursday night’s game. Horton was targeted twice with no receptions. White will need a big week of practice to get back in the race for a backup receiver spot.
