George Kirby starts out on fire, but the Brewers finally get to him in the sixth inning in a disappointing loss for the Mariners.
Similar to Bryan Woo’s recent start versus the New York Yankees, George Kirby started out Monday night’s game as if he was going to do something special in his 100th career start for the Seattle Mariners. Through 5.1 innings against a red-hot Milwaukee Brewers team on a 10-game winning streak, the righty was pitching a no-hitter.
Unfortunately for everyone concerned with the Mariners, Kirby’s no-hitter then fell apart in spectacular fashion. From unhittable to unavoidable, he proceeded to allow five hits and four earned runs and left the game after six innings having thrown 83 pitches and with a 4-0 deficit.
The Mariners couldn’t get anything going offensively as they ended up with just five hits and one walk in a tepid showing. The Brewers added two more runs off Brandyn Garcia making his Major League debut in the top of the eight, to complete the scoring in a disappointing 6-0 loss in front of 30,085 at T-Mobile Park.
Mariners just couldn’t get to the Brewers’ pitching

This represented the Mariners’ sixth shutout of the season and first since a 2-0 loss on June 25 in Minnesota versus the Twins. In fairness to the M’s you have to give some credit to the Brewers, particularly starter Brandon Woodruff who looked stellar through 6.0 innings of shutout ball.
The closest the Mariners came to potentially scoring probably came in the bottom of the eighth, when they had runners at first and third base. However, Julio Rodríguez subsequently grounded out to end the threat and the inning.
A dejected Dan Wilson spoke to the media postgame about how good Kirby was for the majority of his outing, but then gave way to some clutch hitting by the Brewers. The Mariners manager said:
“A tough one tonight. George was just sailing through five with the no-hitter and had great stuff. … (Then) in the sixth they were able to get some runners on and took advantage of their opportunities. I think they were 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position, so that was really the difference in the ball game.”

George Kirby straight to the point with what went wrong
The ultra competitive and demanding Kirby was unsurprisingly frustrated about how things played out for him, when speaking to the media afterwards. Discussing what worked so well in the first five innings but then switched, he said:
“I was getting ahead and then when I got behind … I wasn’t really executing (expletives) and then was kind of leaving stuff over the middle of the plate.”
With the loss the Mariners drop to 53-47 and fall to 5.0 games behind the Houston Astros at the top of the AL West, although they do remain in a wild card spot. They will send Logan Gilbert to the mound on Tuesday night as they attempt to tie this series with the Brewers, but must contend with rookie sensation and All-Star Jacob Misiorowski.

With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Mariners certainly need to strengthen the roster. Which position do you believe is their number one need, and why? Let us know in the comments section below.
