The Huskies finished off their spring season on Friday with “Dawgs After Dark”. Holding a Purple versus Gold inter-squad game. Before the game, former QB Michael Penix Jr. was announced as an honorary coach for Team Purple. When Penix was announced, he received a big ovation from the crowd. The fun continued, as a cart-wheeling competition was used to determine who started with the ball first instead of a traditional coin toss. After Team Gold won the cartwheel challenge, they received the opening kickoff.
Both of the Huskies’ teams struggled to score early
Team Gold’s first drive started well, with several nice carries from RB Jonah Coleman, as he ran for 27 yards on his first four carries. QB Kai Horton completed two passes for 29 yards, including a beautiful ball to freshman WR Raiden Vines-Bright for 18 yards. However, the drive would stall in the red zone, as Team Gold failed to attempt a field goal, following a bad snap on the FG attempt. After Team Purple took over, QB Demond Williams completed two passes (one for a first down), before the drive stalled close to midfield.
The Huskies Defense Dominates
Both of the Huskies defenses did not allow a scoring drive in the first half. Freshman CB Elias Johnson provided the games’ first takeaway with an interception of Kai Horton for Team Purple. Before halftime, C.J. Christian intercepted Kai Horton again, returning the interception 46 yards. Which set up a field goal for Team Purple. With two seconds left in the first half, kicker Grady Gross scored the first offensive points of the game, connecting on a 46-yard field goal. The Huskies’ defense would add two more interceptions (one for a pick-six) and a fumble in the second half.
Several freshmen stood out at the Spring Game
In the second half, two more freshman DBs provided the takeaways after Elias Johnson’s first half INT. Safety Rylon Dillard-Allen provided the game’s first touchdown with a pick-six. Another freshman, safety Rashawn Clark, forced and recovered a fumble. On the offensive side of the ball, freshman receiver Raiden Vines-Bright made a terrific touchdown catch. Which came on the receiving end of a pass from freshman QB Kini McMillan. Another freshman-to-freshman combination came at the end of the game, with QB Dash Beierly hitting WR Marcus Harris for the touchdown.
Takeaways from Huskies’ “Dawgs After Dark”
While several starters sat out or played just half the game, freshmen were given the opportunity to show out. The Huskies’ defense showed they have a deep DB room, as their secondary had four INTs in Friday’s scrimmage. UW made the night fun with corgis running at halftime, RB Jonah Coleman making an extra point, and the players entertained the crowd with creative celebrations following big plays. Team Gold won Friday’s scrimmage 20-12. The Huskies’ next game will be their 2025 season opener on August 30th against Colorado State.
