The Seahawks have used their last two first-round picks on defense. They selected DT Byron Murphy II 16th overall last year and took CB Devon Witherspoon 5th overall in 2023. Each of those players has become a starter and key contributor to the Seahawks’ defense. Seattle found success in the first-round drafting defensive talent and is looking to find success again in 2025. This year’s NFL Draft is stacked with talented DB prospects, providing the Seahawks an opportunity to find a new safety.
Why the Seahawks need to draft a safety
After the 2024 season, the Seahawks released safety Rayshawn Jenkins. Seattle then signed safety D’Anthony Bell to a one-year $1.37 million deal (he has made just 11 career starts in three seasons with the Cleveland Browns). Also, Seattle needs to add a safety in the 2025 NFL Draft, because they only have one safety (Julian Love) signed beyond 2025. Another reason to add another defensive back, is DBs Josh Jobe, Riq Woolen, and Coby Bryant will be free agents after next season.
Nick Emmanwori headlines top safety prospects
When the Seattle picks at 18th overall, Nick Emmanwori is a name to pay attention to. As a safety at the University of South Carolina, Emmanwori was incredibly productive. He had six INTs (two were returned for touchdowns), 166 solo tackles, and 11 PBUs. Emmanwori had a fantastic combine performance, finishing as the most athletic safety in the 2025 NFL Draft class. His 43-inch vertical jump was the best of all participants at the combine and he also had a 4.38 40-yard dash time.
Seahawks interested in Emmanwori
Before the draft, the Seahawks met with safety Nick Emmanwori for a top-30 visit. Targeting Emmanwori in the draft, shows Seattle’s desire to find a safety. Emmanwori is the top safety in this class, which means the Seahawks will have competition in trying to acquire him. Should Emmanwori go, prior to Seattle’s selection at 18th overall, they do have other options. Outside of Emmanwori, Jahdae Barron, Malaki Starks, and Xavier Watts are possible fits at safety.
