Sounders FC added some firepower to their front line with the acquisition of former FC Dallas international striker Jesus Ferreira, according to unnamed sources. In exchange for Ferreira, Dallas will receive $ 2 million in GAM, a 2025 international roster spot, and wantaway winger Leo Chu.
CLINICAL SCORER
The 24-year-old Ferreira spent his entire eight-year career with FC Dallas and became the first homegrown player to sign a designated player contract extension. Ferreira is the youngest player in MLS history to score 50 goals, a feat he accomplished on May 11th in FC Dallas’s 2-1 win over Austin FC. Ferreira missed nine games in 2024 due to a leg strain that saw him record five goals and six assists. In 163 appearances with FC Dalla, Ferreira has scored 53 goals and had 34 assists.
INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Ferreira was a member of the USMNT 2022 World Cup team, scoring 15 goals in 23 appearances. His best year was in 2022, when he scored a career-high 18 goals and six assists.
WHAT ARE THE SOUNDERS GETTING?
After watching all 50 goals, the Sounders get a lethal, clinical, right-footed finisher. Of the 50 goals he scored, several were with his left foot. The “Cheetah,” as he is known, has soft feet that enable him to deftly touch the ball inside the box and quickly unleash a shot before defenders close in. Most impressive for me is that he likes to play between the opposition’s centrebacks and then use his speed to sprint past them.
Yes if that sounds familiar it is. The Sounders will have two of the fastest forwards in Ferreira and Jordan Morris. Ferreira can also carry the ball on the counterattack. That style will complement Pedro de La Vega’s pace and passing skills. On May 19th 2022 Ferreira scored a first-half hat trick against the Portland Timbers in just 10 minutes.
HOW THIS TURNS INTO A BAD DEAL
One word: injury. If the Sounders can keep Ferreira healthy, then this is a win for the player. As previously mentioned, 2024 was a bad year due to hip, thigh, and hamstring injuries. In 2023 season, Ferreira participated in 27 games, scored 12 goals, and had six assists.
