Seahawks waive linebacker Tyrel Dodson

The Seattle Seahawks released linebacker Tyrel  Dodson.  Dodson signed with the Seahawks as an unrestricted free agent during the offseason and started all nine games this season.  Dodson started the first seven games as a middle linebacker, then moved to the weak side after the Seahawks traded for Ernest Jones IV. Jones on  October 24th. Jones IV  started the last two games at middle linebacker.

DECENT PERFORMANCE BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

Dodson’s numbers looked decent enough: 71 combined tackles, 41 of which were assisted, and two tackles. What is clear is that head coach Mike Macdonald and his staff were not pleased with Dodson’s performance scheme-wise. The Seahawks’ run game defense continues to be an issue. The Seahawks’ run defense is ranked 23rd but 26th in yards per rushing attempt and total rushing yards.

The release of Dodson creates a starting opportunity for rookie Tyrice Knight, who started the Dolphins and Lions games earlier this season when he replaced the injured Jerome Baker. Knight has participated in eight games and has 23 tackles, eight of which were solo.

“Well, we expect him (Tyrice Knight) to keep improving as a player and he’s going to get a lot more reps now so just try to take his game to the next level, do what he does, make tackles, play good solid football for us. And looking forward to seeing what he does with the opportunity, ” said Macdonald when asked who would replace Dodson.

Drake Thomas is another potential candidate to replace Dodson. Thomas has participated in all nine games this season as a special teams specialist.

DODSON FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

The release of Dodson by the Seahawks will see the veteran linebacker hit the waiver wire and be available for $1.1 Million for the rest of the season.  Dodson signed a one-year deal for $4,260,00  when he joined the Seahawks.  Dodson received a $ 1 million signing bonus, a  $250,000 Wk one bonus, plus per-game incentives the Seahawks will pay him $ 2,895,000.  If Dodson is claimed off waivers by another NFL team the Seahawks will pay him an additional  $,125,000 by $270,000 per in game bonsus for the remaining nine games.

ADDITIONAL ROSTER  MOVES

In addition to the Dodson waiving, the Seahawks signed Josh Jobe off the practice squad and signed tight end N’Keal Harry to the practice squad.
