Seattle Sounders take care of business advance to Western Conference Semi- Final round

The Settle Sounders were not at their best on the attacking end during regulation play but relied on their defense to push the game into another penalty shootout. Just as they did in Monday’s penalty shoot-out win over the Dynamo, the Sounders were perfect in the shootout and, as a result, advanced to the Western Conference Semi-Finals.

DIFFERENT PATHS SAME RESULT

In game one, the two teams were scoreless in regulation. In game two, Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan scored both goals in regulation. Roldan started the game playing in a false nine position behind striker Raul Ruidiaz, who was in the line-up due to injuries to Jordan ( hamstring ) and Albert Rusnáck ( hip). Head coach Brian Schmetzer inserted Joao Paulo into Roldan’s vacant midfielder position.

LACK F CREATIVITY

Outside of Cristian Roldan’s 87th-minute goal that gave the visitors the lead, the Sounder’s best chance was in the 4th minute when a Paul Rothrock pass across the Houston goal mouth had too much pace for a speeding Alex Roldan, who directed the ball wide.

The Dynamo started the game on the front foot and nearly scored in the 18th minute when Dynamo striker  Ezequiel Ponce right footed shot was headed for the net but cleared off the line by Alex Roldan.  In the 41st minute, Ponce tested Frei with a right-footed shot that forced a hockey-type kick save from Frei.  Dynamo midfielder Hector Herrera’s red card in the 66th turned the match momentum back to the Sounders, who could not take advantage until Cristian Roldan’s go-ahead goal in the 87th minute. The Sounders lead  lasted just six minutes

A cross by Dynamo defender Griffin Dynamo zipped across the Sounder’s goal mouth and ended at the feet of an onrushing Roldan and rioted into the Sounders net.  The two sides remained in deadlock, and for the second time in  two games, the Sounders and Dynamo went to the penalty shootout to determine a match-winner

PENALTY SHOOT-OUT

In the  shoot out the Sounders were once again perfect converting all seven of their penalty  attempts. The Dynamo made their first six attempts but were denied on the seventh attempt when Stefan Frei blocked  Tate Schmitt’s  left foot strike.
