The Seattle Sounders played a decent game in regulation and were perfect five for five in the penalty shoot phase of their opening game with Houston Dynamo. Perfection saw the Rave Green take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-three series with the Houston Dynamo.
BALANCED STARTING LINEUP
Sounders head coach inserted a balanced lineup that saw Joao Paulo next to Cristian Roldan in the defensive middle with Albert Rusnáck in the advanced position next to Paul Rothrock, Pedro de la Vega, and Jordan Morris upfront. The backline consisted of Nouhou, Jackson Ragen, Yeimar, Alex Roldan, and Stefan Frei in goal. Schmetzer’s side started the game on the front foot with a high press and fast-paced passing, looking to unlock the Dynamo defense. The Sounders had some looks on goal but never challenged Dynamo keeper Steve Clark.
Twenty-five minutes into the game, the Dynamo found their footing by implementing a high press, which stymied the Sounder’s attack and put them on the back foot. With neither side able to find that clean shot to beat the opposing keeper, the halftime break saw a scoreless first half.
WILD SECOND HALF
Both teams experienced a wide range of twists and turns in the second half. A halftime adjustment by the Sounders saw them regain the dominant position in the game. Tightness in Jordan Morris’s hamstring forced Schmetzer to sub the striker for Raul Ruidiaz and Georgi Minoungou for Pedro de la Vega. The substitutions enabled the Sounders to play a more free-flowing attacking style, and the Sounders nearly took the lead in the 58th minute.
Yeimar’s right-footed shot was blocked, and one minute later, Ruidiaz’s right-footed show was high and wide. The Sounders continued to push the tempo but to no avail. The game took a wild twist when Dynamo midfielder Coco Coarrasquilla was issued a red card for violent conduct, reducing the Dynamo to ten men.
THE SOUNDERS WERE UNABLE TO FIND A GO-AHEAD GOAL
The Sounders sought, searched, and hunted but could not capitalize on the numerical man advantage. After a goalless draw after a regular 90 and an added 12 minutes of stoppage, the game went straight to a penalty shoot. The Sounders were able to find that golden goal or rather five golden goals as they converted all five of their penalties for the 1-0 win.

MATCH NOTES
- Tonight’s contest marked the opening of Seattle’s Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs campaign, the 15th postseason run for Seattle during the club’s 16-year MLS history. The second of the best-of-three series is slated to take place on Sunday, November 3 at Shell Energy Stadium (3:30 p.m. PT / Apple TV, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).
- Seattle is now 19-6-8 in MLS play against Houston, including a 14-0-3 record at home (MLS regular season and MLS Cup Playoffs).
- Monday’s contest was the third match between Seattle and Houston in 2024, with Sounders FC defeating Dynamo FC 1-0 on September 28 at Lumen Field. Prior to that, the two sides played to a 2-2 draw in Houston on July 19.
- Tonight’s match marked the first postseason series between Seattle and Houston since 2017. That season the two clubs met in the Western Conference Championship, with Sounders FC advancing to MLS Cup. The clubs also met in the MLS Cup Playoffs in 2009 – Seattle’s inaugural MLS season – with Houston advancing over two legs.
- Tonight’s match concluded in Sounders FC’s fifth penalty shootout in MLS Cup Playoffs history. Sounders FC won against Toronto to claim the 2016 MLS Cup, while falling in the other three shootouts (2015 vs. FC Dallas, 2018 vs. Portland and 2021 vs. Real Salt Lake).
- With the shutout tonight, Stefan Frei recorded his 14th clean sheet in the MLS Cup Playoffs, moving him into sole possession of second place in the postseason record books. Only Kevin Hartman is ahead of Frei in this category with 15 postseason shutouts, with Frei having the opportunity to equal this mark in Seattle’s next outing. Frei previously passed Hartman for second all-time in regular-season shutouts earlier this season, with the Seattle captain currently sitting on 116 clean sheets.
- Seattle’s starting lineup mirrored the same XI that Head Coach Brian Schmetzer selected against Portland on October 19 in the team’s regular-season finale. The only change was João Paulo moving back into a starting central midfield role for the suspended Obed Vargas, who missed tonight’s contest due to receiving two yellow cards in the Portland match on Decision Day.
