The Seahawks returned to practice, took one last look back at the Monday night loss to the Detroit Lions, and quickly turned their focus to Sunday’s game with the New York Giants. The loss to the Lions was the team’s first loss of the season and will serve as its biggest hurdle of the season. How will the team respond? Head coach Mike Macdonald has been intentional about setting the example from the top down.
“ Whatever shows up on tape is my responsibility. At the end of the day, I’m responsible for what goes on out there, and our guys are fighting their tails off to go do it, said Macdonald. “ No player is ever going to show up and want to do it the wrong way.”
In addition to managing on field expectations and performance the Seahawks schuduel of three games in ten days presents a unique challenge for Macdonald and his coaching staff. With limited time between games , player recovery has to be blanced with preparededness given there is only a limited amount of time each day.
“The good news is they don’t change the game times throughout the year, so we’ve been able to factor this into our processes.Sam Ramsden has been great bouncing ideas off of, we track all the players and everything, “ Said Macdonald . “ Again, there’s no secret recipe on it. A lot of it’s a feel for where the guys are at too and what they need and what the team needs any given day.”
The most important thing for McDonald and the team is moving forward and staying focused on the task at hand. In order to move on, the team needs to learn and move on mentally. Macdonald has been preaching the next play mentally since his arrival and will now be tested. In leading by example, McDonald is focused on the next opponent and putting his players in a position to be successful.
‘Hey, let’s look at how we’re doing things. How can we get incrementally better in all the processes? Coaches, how we organize things, how we walk through. Players, how we take meetings, how we communicate in meetings.’ Just how can we take incremental steps throughout the week to put ourselves in a position mentally so we can go out and play our best football, and then in the game how we’re communicating as coaches, how we adjust, all those things. I mean all those things around the table; we’ve talked about them. Unfortunately, this is creating an opportunity for us to really face those things head on and that’s what we’re going to do.”
