Do Reign have what it takes to make playoffs after loss to Bay FC

The Reign faced Bay FC on Sunday, September 29th, at Lumen Field. Both teams were intent on leaving the match with a win, fighting for a chance at the playoffs. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, 9,051 fans attended the game.

First Half

Both teams came out strong from the whistle, setting a fast tempo. Both teams got plenty of shots off in the first half, the Reign with five and Bay with eight. Although the Reign were able to create some chances, their finishing was lacking.

Bay FC Convert PK

In the 25th minute Bay FC’s Oshoala lined up to take a penalty kick after being fouled by Phoebe McClernon in the box. Oshoala converted the shot and the Reign went down 1-0. The Reign continued to fight through the remainder of the first half, although the energy in the stadium dipped.

At halftime the score was 1-0 with Bay FC taking the lead.

Second Half

At the start of the second half both teams were looking to convert attempts after a lack luster first half. Reign’s Jordyn Huitema, Ji So-Yun, and Tziarra King repeatedly created chances, trying to use their creativity to find a goal.

After coming into this game on a three-win streak and unbeaten in the last five games, the Reign looked to have a strong chance at winning. But as the minutes wound down, it started to seem less likely.

With neither team able to convert in the second half Reign and their fans were left wishing for more. A team that has seen such success under the coaching of Laura Harvey still isn’t seeming themselves.

Looking Ahead

The Reign still have a chance for the playoffs, but it means winning…a lot. Can they recreate the streak they just lost, and have something to show for the season? The Reign take on Angel City FC at Lumen Field on Friday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m. PT.
