Lions hand Seahawks first loss of the season.

The Seahawks faced their toughest test  in the  Detroit Lions on Monday Night and came up short in a wild  42-29  shoot out. After a lackluster first half the Seahawks showed their resiliency in the second half but were unable to overcome a Lions team that was clicking from the beginning.

The Lions scored the first fourteen points of the game, and the Seahawk spent the night chasing the Lion’s two-headed monster in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.  The pair  combined for  116 rushing yards

KEN WALKER  FINDS HIS FOOTING

With the run game in full gear, the Seahawks’ defense was on its heels, and it opened up the play-action for  Lions quarterback  Jared  Goff, who had one of his best days as a pro.  Goff completed all 18 of his pass attempts for  292 yards and two touchdowns. Goff also caught a TD pass on a trick play

Down 21 to  7 at the half, the Seahawks exploded for  22 second-half points and made a game of it. After rushing for just 18 yards in the first half, the Seahawks rushed for 115 yards in the second half. Ken Walker rushed for 68 of the 115 yards and scored three touchdowns, affirming that he is fully back and can be counted on.

A GREAT DAY FOR GENO SMITH

Another bright spot for the Seahawks was the play of Geno Smith.  Despite being  hunted, pressured and pursed all night long , Smith completed 38 of 56 pass attempts scored one interception and finished with a career high 395 passing yards. Smith was sacked  three times and had one interception. Those numbers could have easily doubled  were it not for Smith’s countless Houdini acts to avoid the Lions relentless pass rush .

BLOW COVERAGES MISSED ASSIGNMENTS

The real issue for the Seahawks was that there were too many blown assignments due to execution and communication. The Lions had four players that were 29 yards or more.  The longest was a 70-yard TD pass from Goff to Jameson Williams. The Seahawks had two plays that were 29 yards. The inability to set the edge resulted in long runs by the Lions. The lack of communication allowed the Lions to exploit the middle of the Seahawk’s defense on the ground and the sidelines with the pass.  While the Seahawks were missing six starters to start the game and then seven in the third quarter,  the lack of communication and execution of the game plan would not have mattered who was in the game.  This game was about lessons learned for the defense.

BIG PICTURE

This is the first time Mike Macdonald and his team have faced real adversity. How the team responds will say a lot about Macdonald and his players. The team has a short week. They will host the New York Giants on Sunday at Lumen Field.
