Sunday will mark his first game as the NFL’s youngest head coach. During Wednesday’s press conference, Mike Macdonald took a very quick, and I mean quick, moment to reflect to reflect on how things have come full circle.
“It’s come full circle being up on the podium here on the stage. I’m having flashbacks of our intro press conference. Forgot to wear my hoodie. We told everybody this week how appreciative we were of all the work that goes into it. There’s so many people behind the scenes, all the players, all the support staff, everyone in the building. It’s so much work just to try and get it aligned and kind of bring it in the same direction. I’m very appreciative of everybody’s attitude. I think we’re on our way to that, I think it’s an ongoing process from here till eternity, hopefully. But here we are. We’ve got to go play a football game and go try to put our best foot forward.”
Since his arrival as the Seahawk’s head coach, Macdonald has talked about stacking days , that is, staying in the moment with each practice. A cerebral base grounded in analytics partly describes Macdonald. To a man, each player has talked about his intelligence, goofiness, and ability to be clear and precise when communicating.
“He’s very cerebral. He loves football, loves the game, loves scheming up other opponents, and loves watching the film. He’s just all about football, all about getting everybody better. And he’s a very team-oriented guy, ” said DK Metcalf during his Wednesday press conference “So, one individual is not bigger than the team. I think that’s the main thing that really sticks out about his coaching points or his coaching approach.”
Linebacker Tyrel Dodson, who was signed by the Seahawks this offseason as an unrestricted free agent after spending his first five years in the NFL with the Bufallo Bills, also praised Macdonald.
“He’s smart. He doesn’t know how smart he is. That guy is so smart. I thought I was smart, he blows me out of the water. The way he coaches, he’s very hands on. He likes getting reps and reps and reps. He’s very smart and he’s very consistent. I like consistent people. I keep saying the word consistent because you see the guys, the Kam Chancellors and the Richard Shermans they were so consistent that’s why their names keep getting mentioned because of consistency.”
LOOKING FORWARD AND STAYING IN THE MOMENT
So, after taking that brief moment to reflect, Macdonald went back to his comfort zone , speaking about his players and Sunday’s upcoming game against the Broncos.
“I’m excited to see our guys go play. Any time, even in the preseason, the guys that were playing in those games I was excited to go see them do it for real. The stakes are higher obviously. You can just go down the list of everyone that’s going to step on to the field. I could give you a reason on why I’m excited to see them go do their thing and go play some ball.”
TOUGH TEST
Sunday’s opener against the Denver Broncos will feature an offensive genius in Sean Peyton, whose offense will be led by rookie Bo Nix.
“He’s going to play everybody. They do a great job of playing all their guys, there’s a lot of different personnel groups. Run and pass are complementary. The drop back game I think is consistent for the quarterback but they can create explosives that way too. They get the ball to their playmakers. It’s a tried and true system. They’ve done it really well for a long time.”
As for facing Nix Macdonald pointed out that Peyton will put him in a position to succeed and be effective due to his football assets.
“Well he plays on time, he seems like he makes a lot of fast decisions. Kind of like Drew (Brees) was, he’s an underrated athlete. Just being able to move in the pocket, extend plays, it seems like he’s really accurate. I think he has probably an underrated arm, he can deliver the ball just about anywhere. I think the decision making, how fast he plays is probably one of the things they like about him.”
