Recapping Seahawks show and tell in front of the 12’s

The 12s got their first glimpse of the  Seahawks under new head coach Mike  Macdonald on a bright sunny day at Lumen Field. The scrimmage/fan fest was what one would expect at your typical show-and-tell affair. Having said that, there were some takeaways from the event.

HEAD COACH WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE SETTING

For Head coach Mike Macdonald, several players, and most of his coaching staff Saturday was the glimpse of Lumen Field in a game-like setting

“What an atmosphere, man. It’s really surreal being in the stadium and then we got the jets over. Again, it’s just tough to beat and the guy’s spirits were high. The music’s going and trying to stay organized for the different things we were trying to get done in practice which I think we were able to accomplish , said Macdonald. “

Just having the fans out there was just was really cool so shout out to the 12s. Just an awesome time to get in the stadium. We won’t be back until Cleveland week. Just good to go through our operation. We went live a little bit with the threes (third units) there. Get a good chance to evaluate some of the young guys and (it will) be fun to watch the tape and see where we’re.”

TYPICAL WARM-UP DRILLS

The team started out stretching and then went to positional drills. It was a scrimmage-type situation with PJ Walker taking the snaps.  Walker looked decent in his decision-making and the accuracy of his passes. The one blemish in the drill was a Walker pass to  MacIntosh, who caught the ball over the middle for about 15 yards, then fumbled it, which was scooped up by cornerback D.J. James, who returned it for a touchdown.

ONE-ON-ONE DRILLS

The next phase of the scrimmage introduced a unique one-on-one drill, adding an element of excitement and unpredictability to the event.

Nehemiah Pritchard vs Laviska Shenault.Jr, who scored a touchdown on the play with an inside-out move down the right corner.

The next match-up was  K’Von Wallace vs  Jake Bobo. Wallace jammed Bobo off the line and won the battle with the pass sailing incomplete.  Then it was Carlton Johnson vs  Eason Winston Jr, who stuck with Winston Jr, causing an incomplete pass . The last play in the drill was Ken Walker vs   Tyrel Dodson.  Walker was able to use his speed and blew by Dodson. PJ Walker threw all the passes .  The drill was an example of  Macdonald’s philosophy on continual competition.

SPECIAL TEAMS FOCUS

The NFL’s new kickoff return rules have teams scrambling to find a competitive advantage. The Seahawks, like every other team in the NFL, are experimenting a lot .

Several players were rotated in both the punt and kick return formations. Laviska Shenault Jr., Dee Williams, Dee Eskridge, Tre Brown, Dareke Young, and Easop Winston Jr. all took turns returning the ball in the kick return formation. In the punt return formations, Jaxson Smith-Njigba joined Eskridge, Winston, and Williams.

“We’re just in the evaluation phase,” Macdonald said. “When you see it in preseason hopefully we get a lot of reps of that and opportunities to see who can do something with the ball.”

Punter Michael Dickson showed that he is season-ready with a 62-yard punt that wowed the crowd.

SAM HOWELL PLAYED THE PART

With Geno Smith  watching  Sam Howell was given another chance to show his  worth. Howell had a decent day .  He made some good quick decision’s but  miss fired on a couple of passes .

“It was cool to see him have an opportunity with those guys. I thought our offense looks like our offense, but excited to get Geno (Smith) back too. It’s just a good opportunity for Sam (Howell) to be with those guys rather than running with the twos (second unit) the whole time,’ Said  Macdonald during his  post game press conference .”

“Again, we’re, what, ten days into camp? So as you’re talking, I’m thinking about how we improve the whole thing. I’m sure if you talk to Sam, he’s got things that he wants to improve on, but he’s also getting the ball out, getting it to our playmakers too, so a lot of good as well.”
