Reign’s Surprising Loss Against Tijuana

Seattle Reign faced Tijuana Femenil in the NWSL and Liga MX Summer Cup. In the Reign’s second match of the summer cup they fell 3-2 to Tijuana after trailing for most of the game. This result was unexpected for many but given the previous results of the season some were disappointed but unsurprised. All teams in the Reign’s group are now tied at 3 points each after one win and one loss for each team. The Reign should not be discounted for the rest of the tournament.

First Half

The match started off with a ball sent through the Reign’s back line to Tijuana’s number 30. She sent the ball over the keeper as Laurel Ivory stepped out to challenge the player. The box was empty and the ball went straight into the net leaving the Reign behind 1-0 within the first two minutes. Although this isn’t an ideal start the Reign have experience come back from these positions.

Through the next 20 minutes both sides continued to push for more opportunities, Emeri Adames had an excellent opportunity sending a strong shot towards goal. It was deflected by the Keeper, and the Reign continued to push forward.

In the 40th minute Tijuana’s number 30 scored her second goal of the day. A through ball was sent behind the Reign’s back line yet again. Where Solorzano dribbled it through the box and sent it past the keeper. Then with the Reign down 2-0 at halftime the Reign needed to prepare to come back.

Second Half

And coming back is just what they did. In the 47th minute Emeri Adames got the goal she had been searching for. Adames came through the towards the top of the box and sent a missile to the far side of the net and the Reign were now back in the running.

In the 62nd minute the Reign had the ball in Tijuana’s box and a shot deflected to Madison Mercado. Mercado took the opportunity and shot that tied the match at 2-2. Once the Reign were tied the match it was seeming like they might just be able to win.

Unfortunately the Reign were not the next to score in the 84th minute Solorzano scored her 3rd goal of the night for Tijuana. This was the last goal of the match. The Reign were not able to finish their comeback. Although this was quite disappointing, it did not discount the Reign from the rest of the cup.
