After asserting his players and coaches had given it their all and accomplished their goals Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald canceled the last day of the team’s three mini-camp.
“We were scheduled for practice tomorrow, but told the guys that we’re not going to practice, that we’re done for our spring program. Just really couldn’t be happier with the effort. That’s what I was telling them, “ Macdonald said after the team’s last spring practice.
“The effort, the intent, the energy, the attitude, all the things we’re asking them to do, they responded every day. Just excited about where we’re at. We’ve been going at it here. We had the extra week with the new staff and everything. Felt like it was an opportunity to get out of here healthy and have a great offseason. “
UNDERSTANDING HIS PLAYERS
Give credit to Macdonald for knowing how hard to push his players. Practices have been different his Macdonald took over the team. That is no surprise The surprise would be if they weren’t. From the first day since he arrived, Macdonald has preached to build a culture of trust and respect between the coaches and players. Within that framework, Macdonald instilled his style of tempo, intentionality, and competitiveness.
“I hope we’re building what we’re trying to build. I think we’re on our way. But shout out to our coaches, too. We just try to take advantage of every meeting, stack those meetings over and over and over again, stack every opportunity we’ve had on the field. Just felt it was time to say we’ve gotten great work in. Let’s get the heck out of here.”
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
In addition to the energy and edge of practices, Macdonald created a leadership council to aid in the communication between coaches and players.
Yeah, it’s an opportunity just to open the channels of communication where we can bounce ideas off one another and they can be a conduit from the locker room from our messages as coaches out to the rest of the team,’ said Macdonald when asked about the leadership council. “Then if there is something that is going on with the team we need to know about, we can have those conversations. That goes for the whole team. It’s just an opportunity to shrink the sample size so to speak and build that relationship, and we kind of forward the message throughout the whole building. So we’ve got a great group”
A FEW DAYS OFF
The players will be off until the middle of July when rookies will report and then the veterans to start training camp. With his training camp schedule finished Macdonald plans on spending some days with his family and taking a small break.
“Camp is pretty much planned. Make some final tweaks, that sort of thing. There are a lot of studies I haven’t been able to get to like top that I want to get to when I have more time on my hands. At some point, you do have to get away. Quick trip planned with my wife. Family will be in town. It will be a good time to get away, get back into a routine outside of the building. Everyone should take that mentality: get away, get refreshed, be with your loved ones, be safe. It’s an opportune time. Haven’t had a break since maybe last year, so it will be good. “
INJURY REPORT
The injury report did not change with linebackers Tyrel Dodson Jerome Baker and right tackle Abraham Lucas expected to be back for the start of training camp.
