Reign Still Yet to Win on the Road

The Seattle Reign faced the Washington Spirit on May 24th at Audi Field. The game ended in a 3-2 scoreline with the Spirit taking the win. Although the Reign had their share of good moments during the game they are yet to find a win away from home. They will face Kansas City Current on June 9th at 3:00pm PT, another away game this one at CPKC stadium.

First Half

The Reign started the game off strong as Tziarra King had an opportunity inside the box in just the 10th minute. Things took a turn when after multiple close attempts, Washington’s Bethune took a shot with her left foot from the top of the box, past the Reign keeper Laurel Ivory and into the bottom corner. In the 21st minute Washington were looking dangerous and up 1-0.

Seattle were able to make some promising moves after going down 1-0. However it was the Spirit who drew the next blood as Trinity Rodman was fouled by Ivory in the box and was awarded a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Andi Sullivan stepped up to take the PK and struck it with her right foot, converting the penalty. Washington was then up 2-0.

The Reign continued to fight on but were out paced in the 45th minute where a cross from outside the box found Spirit’s Sarr for a header that went over the keeper. 3-0 is a hard scoreline to face but the Reign weren’t about to give up and let their heads hang.

A Glimpse of Hope

After multiple close attempts Phoebe McClernon crossed the ball into the box where she found Veronica Latsko’s run. Latsko headed the ball into the goal in the 45th+4 and Seattle started to search for redemption.

The second half saw less numbers added to the scoreline but nevertheless had its share of exciting moments. Jordyn Huitema returned to play after being out for multiple weeks with an injury. This was a relief for many Reign fans as her scoring ability has been sorely missed.

Rookie Adames’ First Goal

In the 95th minute Sofia Huerta sent the ball into the box where it was headed towards Reign’s Emeri Adames. Adames volleyed the ball and drilled it past the keeper for the Reign’s second and final goal of the night. This goal marked the rookie’s first NWSL career goal and first goal for the Reign.

Looking Forward

The Reign will have to continue to be aggressive on the ball as they face Kansas City Current next. Although we are quite a few games into the season it seems like we are still waiting for the Reign to click. With the return of injured players and some goals under their belt we will see if the Reign can take some points home during this away stretch.
