Seahawks organized team activities are about learning the new system and each other

Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald’s plan for his team is very similar to that old John Wooden quote be quick but don’t hurry.

It’s a challenge right now. We’re still installing — going to be installing defensively throughout. Install two is today. We’ll evaluate it as we go,” said Macdonald after day two of the team’s  OTA practice.  “ So if a guy is slow to make some checks today, anticipating things, so we’ll make some decisions so it doesn’t pile on so we don’t get too far behind. Not worried about the pace of how fast we get everything in. We want a really good foundation for when we get into camp. So we have a schedule, but we’ll adjust as we go.”

With a completely new coaching staff that is learning it’s self and players, Macdonald sounds like a wise coach beyond his years.  What is clear about the Seahawk’s first-year head coach is that he has a clear plan on how to achieve his goal of making the Seahawks a championship team.

“I think we had a pretty clear vision about how we wanted practice to go. We wanted it to be fast, execute, loud, get the job done, and get the heck out of here. There is not a lot of lollygagging around. Again, you don’t practice to practice. You’re practicing to train to go play the game. A lot of the decisions that we’re making are inspired by that principle behind the whole thing.”

To build  a championship team Macdonald believes clarity and competition are two critical components.

“ Well, it let’s you play the right way. You know, if I know exactly what’s expected of me, how I’m supposed to do it, now I can go play the play we want on both sides of the ball. So if it’s out there and it’s gray it slows you down. Put yourself in those positions of those guys out there. Where do you stand, what do you look at, how do you move, all these types of things. That’s why it takes so much time. That’s what differentiates good teams from great teams.”

During Wednesday’s practice there was minimal downtime. Players went from drill station to drill station with pace, and internationality. As expected there were plenty of new drills.
