Sounders FC has traded Ecuadorian center-back Jaxier Arreaga for the New England Revolution in exchange for a 2025 International Roster Slot and up to $75,000 in 2025 General Allocation. The club announced the move via press release. The move had been coming for quite a while and was not solely connected to Arreaga’s giveaway that resulted in a Vancouver Whitecaps during the Sounders 2-0 loss to the Whitecaps. Yeimar had an equal gaffe and he is still with the team.
A PROMISING START
The team has been looking to find a place for Arreaga for at least a season and a half. The emergence of Jackson Ragen in the last years made Arreaga expandable. Jackson and Yeimar anchored a stingy Seattle defense that allowed the least amount of goals in 2023. When the club signed defender Nathan in January and added Jonathan Bell in February the writing was on the wall for Arreaga
Arreaga was a tall and fundamental player who never reached his potential with the Sounders.
When he signed with the Sounders in 2019 it looked to be a good fit and it was for a hot moment. During the club’s MLS trophy-winning season, Arreaga appeared in 17 games across all matches and started in the team’s Western Conference win over LAFC. In 2022 Arreaga was named to the 2022 Concacaf Champions League Best Xi squad after starting all eight games during the team’s historic Championship.
COMMITTED TO THE TEAM
What stagnant Arreaga’s growth with the team was his penchant for dribbling the ball out of pressure when in dangerous situations. When a pass would have been the safer route, Arreaga would dribble the ball with mixed results. Despite his flaws, Arreaga stayed true to the team and was never a disruption despite a lack of playing time
Arreaga has 20 career appearances for the Ecuador National Team and was a member of La Tri’s final roster at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He made nine appearances in World Cup Qualifying, scoring his lone international goal in a 6-1 win over Colombia on November 17, 2020. Before coming to MLS, Arreaga played for Barcelona SC of the Ecuadorian topflight, where he started 78 of 79 appearances over four seasons.
