It’s just five games into the NWSL season and Seattle Reign FC have just lost their 4th game in a row. The Reign faced the Chicago Red Stars in their second match-up of the season, only one month after their first meeting. The Reign fell 2-1, even after Tziarra King injected hope into the team with a goal in the second half.
First Half
The tone of the first half was set early when Chicago’s Mallory Swanson connected with Allison Schlegel for a goal in the 4th minute. The Reign had difficulty finding their rhythm after going down 1-0 so early in the half. They endured more attacks and chances from the Red Stars before Swanson found herself with the ball and no coverage in the box. She quickly found the back of the net, and Chicago was up 2-0 in the 31st minute.
Standout Performance
Emeri Adames got her first NWSL start and showed why she’s a player to watch. Throughout the whole game the 18-year-old showed off her creativity and speed as she created chances, and kept the Red Stars on their toes. She will be critical to watch throughout this season as she refines her skills and gets used to playing NWSL games.
Second Half
At the beginning of the second half Coach Laura Harvey didn’t hesitate to make changes to her lineup, bringing in experienced players. Chicago tried to come out aggressive, but the Reign didn’t fold under pressure. With a chip on their shoulder the Reign seemed to settle into their own speed and start creating dangerous attacks.
Reign Goal
Harvey made two more substitutions in the 77th minute, one of which brought on Tziarra King. King, like the rest of the team, was frustrated with their position, so she brings the quality the team has been missing. Two minutes after being subbed on King has the ball well outside the box and took the shot with her right foot, the ball was rifled into the top right corner, and the crowd erupted.

Disappointing End
Although King’s goal brought up the tempo of the team, none of their other chances made it past the keeper. The final score remained 2-1 for Chicago. The team knows there is still much time left in the season and all is not lost. They will continue to fight out of this streak against North Carolina Courage on April 27th at WakeMed Soccer Park
