Huskies spring football starts on the right foot

If the first impression are lasting impression then give the Washington Huskies Football players an A grade for the first of spring practice.  The Husky football program began a new era under head coach Jedd Fisch on Wednesday afternoon.

“Good first day,” Fisch said. “Good to be back on the field. A lot going on, and to be back with the guys and move practice and be with the kids today was fun. It was fun to see everybody compete, run around, and get after it a little bit.”

LIMITED NUMBER OF PRACTICES

With just 14 more practices before the  May 3rd Dawgs After Dark Spring Game  Fisch and his coaching staff have quite a bit of work to do.  The way players moved precisely from one drill to the next showed this was not   Fisch’s first rodeo. Quite the opposite. There was a pro-like manner in the way the coaches gave instructions and then let players complete the drill.   The instruction was sharp, crisp,  and clear.  That is not a knock on a previous coaching regime,  it was a noticeable observation.

NEW  WRINKLE TO PRACTICE SITE

Fisch also brought in a system of three practices for the players. Under former head coach Kalen DeBoer and others, the Huskies practiced at Husky Stadium with the occasional switch to the east practice field. Under Fisch, the players practice in Husky Stadium,  inside the Dempsey Indoor facility, and the east  practice field

“I don’t like practicing on the game field too often, but I feel we might have to right now,” Fisch explained, citing space needs. “I used to think the game field is a sacred place.”

The other noticeable change under Fisch was the defense wearing purple jerseys while the offense wore white.

During his post-practice interview, Fisch said that the coaching staff’s goal for the spring was to focus on fundamentals and technique.  Fisch added that he hopes to  have 85% of the offense and 80-85% of the defense installed by the end of spring

With day one in the books, the  Jedd Fisch official began with the new coach owning the program by implementing his systems and philosophies.  The first real test will be August 31st against  Weber State.
