As Seattle Sports‘ Brock Huard previously admitted, he had to learn not to be so invested in every single Seattle Mariners game to the same degree he was — and is — with the Seahawks. When you’re playing 162 regular season games versus just 17, it’s not a good idea to put yourself through such an emotional roller coaster ride on an almost nightly basis.
At the same time, when it’s early on in the regular season, it’s tough not to react so much to each game. Case in point, the Mariners’ first two contests of the 2024 campaign.
Opening night was a deflating experience, as Luis Castillo let the ballclub down with a poor start in a 6-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Fast forward essentially 24 hours, and George Kirby pitched a gem in bailing the Mariners out in a 1-0 win.
The Mariners are renowned for making slow starts under manager Scott Servais, but given that this is his contract year, this is one season where he really has to not let this happen. Yes it’s a long season, but if the ballclub has another slow start, this could be perceived as Servais having an inability to get his players prepared and up for games.
Probable starting pitchers

Logan Gilbert (0-0) – Gilbert completes a top three rotation which is among the very best in the Majors. Last season saw the 26-year-old continue to develop as he produced a 3.73 ERA and 3.85 FIP, equal his career-high of 13 wins and set new personal bests with 190.2 innings pitched and a 1.075 WHIP. The scary thing for opposing batters is that Gilbert has the potential to offer even more.
Kutter Crawford (0-0) – The 2023 campaign was a breakout one for Crawford, as he established himself in the Red Sox rotation. He had career bests of 23 starts, a 4.04 ERA, 3.83 FIP and 1.106 WHIP. However he still has plenty to work on, as evidenced by just four quality outings in his 23 starts. (He made 31 appearances in total.)
