While the Seahawk’s future is not completely clear it will not be with Jama Adams, Will Dissly, or Quandre Diggs. The team released all three players Tuesday afternoon.
The releasing of the three is no doubt a business decision that will give General Manager John Schneider and Head Coach Mike Macdonald some choices in free agency and the upcoming NFL draw. By releasing the trio the team saves 34.5 million dollars in cash for the upcoming season and most importantly $25 million in salary cap space. The team will take a dead cap hit of $20.8 million from Adams’s salary since his release was made before the the NFL’s free agent signing period which begins March 13.
ON THE FIELD IMPLICATIONS
QUANDRE DIGGS
Diggs release means they will be in the market for a starting free safety. Replacing Diggs will not be easy. The Seahawks acquired Diggs in a trade with Detroit in 2019. A smart heady player who liked to play mind games with quarterbacks, Diggs made three consecutive Pro Bowls from 2020-22. Last year Diggs had a a decent year with 95 tackles and one interception. The lone interception was his lowest with Seattle after recording 14 in the previous three years. The Seahawk’s defense finished 25th in points allowed and 30th in yards allowed minimizing Diggs’s interception chances.
JAMAL ADAMS
A combination of unfortunate injuries and a lack of understanding of who he was as a person made Jamal Adams the public enemy number for Seahawk Nation. The Seahawks acquired Adams from the Jets for two first-round draft picks in 2020 and it looked like the team hit the jackpot when Adams made the Pro Bowl in his first year with Seattle. His numbers were a staggering 87 tackles 11 tackles for a loss and 9.6 sacks. A four-year $70 million deal in 2021 made Adams the highest-paid safety in NFL history.
A promising career was derailed by injuries. From 2021-23 Adams played a total of 22 games. Adams was expected to make $16.5 million and $17.5 million in the remaining two years of his contract. The cap hits the remaining two years were $27.9 million. Julian Love had a breakout year and was named to the NFC Pro Bowl roster and is now the only starting safety . No question the team will be in the market for a starting free safety and a backup for Love.
THIN TIGHT END ROOM
Dissly was in the last year of his contract with no guarantees. Dissly had a salary of $6.4 million in 2024 with a projected cap hit of $10.7 million. His departure leaves the Seahawks with no signed tight end Noah Fant and Colby Parkinson are unrestricted free agents. Look for the team to sign a veteran free agent and an undrafted rookie after the draft.
