Husky hold off Longhorns will face Michigan for National Title

The  No. 2 ranked  Washington Huskies will face the  No.1 ranked  Michigan Wolverines in this year’s National Collegiate Championship Game.  The trip to the title game came down to one play with five seconds left in the game at the Washington 13-yard line.  Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers intended to pass for Mitchell Adonai was batted out of bounds by  Husky cornerback  Makell Esteen to seal the Huskies’ 37-31 win. 

Game MVP Michael Penix Jr passed for 430 yards and two touchdowns completing 29 of 38  pass attempts. Ewers completed 24 of 38  passes for 318 yards and one touchdown. The two quarterbacks were instrumental in a fireworks-filled first half that ended tied at 21 all.

DOMINANT THIRD QUARTER

A dominant third quarter by the  Husky offense limited the  Longhorns offense to just five plays while it reeled off 22 plays chewed up 12:39 of the game clock and scored 10 answered points. It looked as if the  Huskies were on their way to Houston when they led 31-21 after three quarters. A 40-yard field by Husky Grady Gross to start the fourth quarter extended the Huskies’ lead to 34-21 and saw Husky pull out their phones to make travel arrangements to Houston after a three-and-out by the Longhorns offense.

TEXAS LONGHORNS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

A three-and-out by the Husky offense gave life to the Ewers and the Texas offense who narrowed the lead to 28-34  with just over eight minutes to play.  Husky Nation turned all cell phones off as the  Longhorn crowd murmurs turned into wild shouting and chanting.

A 27-yard field goal by Gross gave the  Huskies a 37-28 lead and momentarily quieted  Longhorn Nation.  Longhorn kicker Bert Auburn’s 27-yard field brought Texas to within six points at 31-37 and sent Longhorn Nation it’s a frenzy. A  Husky punt gave the ball back to  Ewers and the Texas offense with 45 seconds left in the game and the ball at the Texas 31-yard line. Ewers drove the Longhorns to the Husky 13-yard line with completions to Jaydon Blue. Three consecutive incomplete passes by Ewers saw the Huskies survive a 37-31 nail bitter.
