The Seattle Seahawks returned to practice Wednesday afternoon after a mini-bye week after back-to-back Thursday night games. While feeling focused and refreshed the challenge of snapping a three-game losing streak is front and center. Making the challenge more difficult is Sunday’s looming rematch with the San Francisco 49ers. The last time the two teams met the Seahawks were overwhelmed by the Niners 31-13 at Lumen Field.
Well, it’s good to be coming off of a couple of days that we got a break. I’m feeling the fresh legs myself, I’m sure the players are too. We have to take advantage of that and make sure that this preparation is right on point. Said Head Coach Pete Carroll during Wednesday’s weekly press conference. “We played these guys a couple of weeks ago and I did not feel like I did a good job in the preparation in the short week with our team. Last week was a really good week and we need to come back and get a really good week again here so that we’re right to play and do the things we want to do. That’s the main focus for me and I know our guys are looking forward to this”
A COMPLICATED OFFENSE
If the Seahawks are to have success on the defensive side against the third-ranked offense in the NFL they will need to be disciplined, stay alert to the multiple pre-snap motions, and be able to quickly process the play once the ball is snapped.
“You have to be aware of the influence of the change of the formation because it can change where you fit and where you fit with other guys. You have to be able to adapt. Part of it is not over-adjusting. You move too fast too far. That’s one of the issues, but that’s just one of them. It’s a really good part of the game. It’s a dynamic part of offensive football that just continues to be expanded. “ Carroll said of the Niners pre-snap movements.
“These guys happen to be really good at it, we are too. We do a lot of stuff and make it hard on our opponents. The whole idea is to lessen the time of evaluation, and also it lessens the time to communicate, where somebody has got to tell the other guy, ‘I just got bumped.’ Sometimes there’s not enough time for that.”
DRAW FROM THE COWBOYS GAME
On the offensive side of the ball, Carroll believes the offense took a step forward in the team’s 41-35 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The 35 points scored by the offense was a vast improvement from the team’s two previous games where they were outscored 31-13 against the 49ers and 17-16 by the LA Rams. Carroll believes there are plenty of positives the team can draw from the loss to the Cowboys in the upcoming game rematch with the Niners.
“There were a lot of positives in that game, and our ability to convert on third down, you could see. Look at the difference in the game. It was a fantastic start, I think we were (9 of 14), which is great stuff. It allowed us to have long drives, sustaining opportunities with the ball, all of those things. That’s a real positive for us. We set our sights on producing a really good outing last week and it showed up, and everything that we tried to get done, basically got done. It’s 1:43 left, down by a touchdown, and you got to go. It came right down to that. Just like we did in the first half, we expected to do that in the second half as well, and then we got stalled in third-and-two and fourth-and-two unfortunately. It was a fantastic game in a lot of ways. A lot of respect to them, they’re a really good team. We went nose-to-nose in a good way.
I would say this, the officiating was part of that game, and it made a big difference in the game, and it went both sides. Both sides there were a lot of calls and a lot of things that you look at. I need to make sure that isn’t the factor in the game. We don’t need that to be the factor, we have to clean our stuff up so that isn’t the issue where calls can be made that can change the game. Defensively, the game gets marred a little bit, because of the first downs that were made on penalties and stuff.
We were playing better than that. We should’ve been able to receive the rewards of that, but we gave them too much. There’s stuff to be done.”
