The Seahawks won their second consecutive preseason game Saturday night at Lumen Field . Starters from both sides of the ball saw action in the Seahawk’s 22-14 win over them Cowboys. Head coach Pete Carroll called it a good successful night in his post-game press conference.
“ Really pleased with the overall feeling of the game from start to finish. We got our ones a little bit of work. Selective ones played on both sides of the ball. Got enough to just get them out there,” said Carroll. “That’s really what we wanted to get done tonight. Starts with Geno getting some snaps, the O-line, all that.”
QUICK TAKES FROM THE GAME
DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD STILL OPEN COMPETITION
Sunday’s snap counts revealed that the competition for starting positions in the defensive secondary is still wide open. Every position except for Quadre Diggs free safety that is. The Pro Bowler has yet to play this preseason. That’s not the case for fs Coby Bryant ( 62 snaps ), ss Jerrick Reed II ( 58 snaps) cornerbacks Tre Brown ( 56 snaps ), and ss Jonathan Sutherland ( 49 snaps) who saw the majority of the snaps in the defensive back field.
Michael Jackson started the game at cornerback but saw just 25 snaps when the game ended. The clear indication here is that the coaches have not made up their mind on who the starters are at cornerback, nickel, and strong safety. The one player who did not have a good game was Jackson. He was out of position on several players. Brown was the exact opposite. He had a solid game and a goal-line interception that helped his cause.
QUARTERBACKS WHERE SHARP
Geno Smith played the first two drives of the game and his play what good. Not much was asked of him and he connected of 5 of 6 passes for 46 yards. Smith did execute a QB sneak for 2 yards. Drew Lock’s number were similar to Smith’s in that he was 5 of 6 for 119 yards. His 48-yard pass to Jackson Smith- Njigba was the pass of the night. Third-string quarterback Holton Ahlers was more active connecting on 7 of 13 passes for 61 yards. Ahlers had two carries for six yards.
When asked about the play of quarterbacks Carroll minced no words
“Both Geno and Drew were five for six, popped the ball around pretty good, looked in command, had no problems at any time really. I wished Geno, we could have connected on the slant we threw, but other than that it was a really clean night for those guys. I thought Holton was a freaking blast watching him play. This kid is a fun football player. He’s tough, he’s scrappy. He comes up with the throw. Threw a great fade ball that we didn’t handle right. He knows how to finish games.”
CAN PLAYERS PLAY WELL ON THE ROAD?
The Seahawks will finish the preseason next week in Green Bay when they take the Packers. After two wins at home, Carroll is now looking to see if the players can be consistent on the road.
“We got to go on the road. We got to take our show on the road and play really hard from start to finish again. It was a pretty consistent effort tonight, again, carrying over from game one. I’m really pleased about that one. That’s something I was hoping for more than anything, we could play good, hard, tough football across the board. We got that done. Now we got to go somewhere else and do it on the road and show our guys it doesn’t matter where we play. Try to teach that, stand for that. Doesn’t matter who we’re playing or where we’re playing, but you got to go prove it. Very difficult place to go.”
