The Seahawks opened their 48th training camp Wednesday afternoon. Without Devon Witherspoon the team’s first round draft and fifth overall pick in this year’s draft. While the team and Witherspoon’s representatives have been speaking a deal has not been reached between the parties.
“”He’s not here today,” coach Pete Carroll in his post-practice press conference with the media. “He knows everything he needs to know. I can’t imagine he won’t be here very soon.”
SIX PLAYERS PLACED ON THE PUP LIST
Before Wednesday’s practice, the team placed six players on the physically unable to perform list. The six players were safety Jamal Adams, line-backer Jordyn Brooks, tight end Noah Fant, cornerback Tariq Woolen, and nose tackles Austin Faoliu and Bryan Mone.
After practice, head coach Pete Carroll was asked about several of the players on the pup list.
( Noah Fant’s health)
“We put him on the PUP list and he had a little work done. He’s in really good shape. He can run full speed and do all the stuff but we don’t want to push him yet. Like the other guys, we want to make sure and guarantee that he’s back and fully equipped to take on the load. He was frustrated by not being out but he agreed with being on the PUP just so we can take care of him.”
Riq Woolen is close to returning to practice)
“Yes. He did very well in all his testing also. He can run, explode, and change direction. All of those guys can, but not yet where they can keep up with the tempo of the day-to-day practicing. We get them in shape for that. We’re going to guarantee that they’re in shape for practice, and then we’ll know that we’re ready to move forward.”
(On Jamal Adams and Jordyn Brooks)
“Both of those guys are PUP and they are in different situations. They have their own unique situations. Both guys came in in really good shape. I mean they are close to being ready. None of us from our side of it and the players side of it want to push it until we get more information here and take our time and judge our way through this thing and make sure we really take care of them, so that’s what we are doing.
So that’s why we PUP those guys. Both those guys have had big recoveries and both those guys have had to work really hard to get here and they did very well in their physicals and their testing and so they were working out. They worked really hard today so they’ll be working hard and we’ll just take it one day at a time and look after them and in the meantime it allows us to evaluate the competition and the other guys get to work and in some sense we will capitalize on that, but both guys are going to make it back.”
Players placed on the PUP list can return to practice at any time before the team cuts it roster to 53 players. After the 53-man roster deadline, any player on the pup list must miss at least four games. Players on the pup list count toward the 90-man roster limit.
