Every word from Pete Carroll’s Friday post-practice presser

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll met with the media one last time Friday afternoon before the team headed to the airport to begin the trek to New Orleans to face the Saints

(Opening Statement)

“Let’s talk Mariners baseball. They have a great promo going out talking about their season, their expectations, and stuff like that. We’ve been following them, so it’s fun to see them come to the point where they can kind of say, ‘Here we are, we are real, and we are going for it.’ They have a great attitude going in. Everybody is cheering them on, it’s going to be fun.”

(On if he will watch the rest of the Mariners game on the flight to New Orleans) “I don’t know about that, I don’t know if we have it or not. We will try to. If we can, we will.”

(On if he played baseball growing up) “Yeah, I love baseball.”

(On the status of Kenneth Walker III) “He did well today, he looked good. He was fine out there, he was doing everything at practice.”

(On if Kenneth Walker III will play this weekend) “I do think he will play.”

(On the status of Marquise Goodwin) “He rested today, and we will make sure on gameday that he is okay. He intends to play and he’s okay, so we will see.”

(On if something happened to Marquise Goodwin at practice or during the game) “Yesterday in practice, he had a little reoccurrence of something that he had felt earlier a while back, so we were just really cautious of it and made sure that we got all of the testing and stuff. He’s clear.”

(On how L.J. Collier did this week) “He did well, he had a solid week. He had a good solid week and did everything. This is his first week back in eight weeks, so to me, we are cautious with a guy coming back just after one week of practice. We don’t want to make him vulnerable, but we have to make that determination. He can play, he’s ready to go.”

(On going against the Saints)

“This is a very difficult team just to play against in general, but their defense is really a highlight of the way they have been successful. The style, the experience, and the scheme is challenging because they do so much stuff. You don’t really know what you’re going to get, you just have to go ahead and execute against whatever they throw at you. You’re right, both of these guys on the edge of their defense are really factors, so we have to block them, make sure that we do all of the right stuff at the right time, keep them guessing, and make sure that it all fits together, run and pass. Hopefully, we can make some first downs.”

(On how they prepare for Taysom Hill)

“Generally, we do it really well from the preparation part of it, but that doesn’t mean the performance part of it is right. That’s what you’re really getting at. He is as diverse of a player there is in football, he can do anything. He can catch the ball outside, he can catch the ball at tight end, he can block, he can run with the football, he can throw the ball, he’s a nice receiver, and he’s a fantastic athlete. We have to understand the positions that he plays and respond to them, and we have a plan to do that. He makes it as challenging as you can make it, as one guy could affect it. Fortunately, we have seen him before and we have prepared for him before. We know that we are not going to be surprised by it, so now we have to go execute.”

(On Taysom Hill’s versatility) “

No, he does all kinds of stuff. They know what they are doing. They make him threaten every aspect of the positions that he plays whether it’s the quarterback spot, or he is the wildcat guy, or he is the tight end or the receiver. He does everything that’s normally demanded of that position. So, he really threatens you in every way.”

(On how Justin Coleman is doing)

“He had a good week and I watched him really closely the first two days this week and I need to see as we come out today to see if he’s still okay. But he had a good solid week and he’s ready to battle too. We are getting healthy. We really are getting healthy, and we have to make some tough decisions to figure that out in a number of areas. J.C. is presenting that for us right now which is good.”

(On if Artie Burns is ready to go) “

Yes. Artie (Burns) is back and ready to go to. Again, we tested him well this week and he held up against it and again, we will see what happens tomorrow and see if they come out of it okay. Like I said, there’s maybe four or five guys here in that kind of predicament in a sense that we’ve got to figure out so we’ve got our plans set. We’ll see what happens.”

(On how Dareke Young’s injury happened)

“It was a practice thing. He got hit in the thigh. I think it was last Friday’s practice. He went up for the ball and came down and landed wrong. And he felt okay Friday and Saturday and then he had a lot of swelling. It was a deep thigh bruise is what it is. They were able to help him. They took some blood out of it, so he feels way better. But he is not ready to go this week.”

(On Darryl Johnson’s injury situation)

“Yes, the clarity is we need to IR (Injured Reserve) him and so we will make a move here. You’ll see and it’s a little bit fluid because we have so many choices right now. We have to figure out how to do it.”

(On if Darryl Johnson’s injury is a foot sprain)

“Yeah. It’s an old injury that showed up according to the test. It was an old injury that got aggravated and it was interestingly one that he didn’t know he had. They determined that it was an old showing. We’re curious on how it is going to work. We don’t know so we are just going to IR him and wait it out and make sure he doesn’t hurt that out further. It’s a little bit of a question on what is going to happen. We are going to give him some time. We will see what happens.”

(On if Rashaad Penny is ready to go) “Yeah.”

(On who played the role of Taysom Hill during practice) “We used a couple of guys. J.J. (Arcega-Whiteside) took the spot and he shared that also with Cade Johnson. Just to get the scope of his play, we used a couple of guys. It really takes like three guys to do all the stuff that he does because he is all over the place. But J.J. was the predominant guy.”

(On if he played the quarterback version of Taysom Hill during practice) “Personally, because I’m such a diversified athlete myself. Is that what you are saying? No. I thought that might be too much for the guys. I was concerned for the guys, I wasn’t sure, I didn’t want to influence them in the wrong way.”
