Seahawks begin Mini Camp Adams, Diggs on hand but no Metcalf

Day One of the Seahawks mini camp was more about who was not there just as much as who was there. Absent from the  Day one festivities was D.K Metcalf.  The fourth-year wide receivers’ absence from the team’s mandatory workouts is not a big surprise. Metcalf is in the last year of his four-year rookie deal.

The three-day minicamp is the only reasonable leverage Metcalf has financially. Missing a minicamp is far less costly than missing the team’s upcoming training camp later this summer.  Contract negotiations between the Seahawks and Metcalf have been reported as on moving forward.

Metcalf was present for voluntary workouts during the Seahawks’ offseason program and it’s not clear whether his absence is considered a violation of team rules or is an excused absence. Metcalf had off-season foot surgery. Since it is mandatory for payers to attend mini-camp. Let’s call it what it is. A mini hold-out.

WHO WAS PRESENT?

The bright note and it was mighty bright was the return of safeties Quandre  Diggs and Jamal Adams. Both players look to be on their way to recovering from serious injuries. Diggs suffered a broken fibula and a dislocated ankle in the Seahawks’ last game of the season against the Arizona  Cardinals. Adams suffered a  torn labrum during the Seahawks’ 30-23 win at San Francisco. Both players participated in the walk-through portion of practice. The pair watched the outside portion of practice which has the players participate with their helmets.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

The absence of  Metcalf is more gamesmanship than anything else. Both sides understand the business side of things and look for a deal to be done before training camp. If no deal is done by then reach for the panic button. The presence of  Diggs and  Adams is an obvious good sign. Both players moved around nimbly and had a great command of the Hawks’ defense.
