Sounders make history with emphatic 3-0 win over Pumas to claim CONCACAF Champions League Trophy.

The Seattle Sounders found their Holy Grail.  After a resounding 3-0-win   Pumas of  Liga MX The Sounders are now the first MLS team to win the CONCAFAC Champions League. In front of a record crowd of 68, 741  fans the Sounders overcame adversity and played a near flawless game. Hard tough fouls by  Pumas saw game-ending injuries to Nohou and Joao Paulo.

While both players left the game the injury to Paulo is most disturbing. Nohou had a right quad injury and was able to walk around though with a limp and take part in the post-game celebration. Paulo was in crutches, and it took considerable effort for him to take part in the post-game celebrations.

BUILDING FROM FIRST ROUND

The Sounder’s historic win was made possible after the Rave Green scored two late goals in Leg One of the Two-legged tournament. After going 2-0  in Mexico last week the Sounder’s two late goals saw them come home in a position to win it all without worry about away goals. With that worry behind them the Sounders knew all they had to do was score one more goal than their opponent.

From the moment the ref the whistle to the game the  Sounders were hell-bent on putting the foot to the peddle and scoring every opportunity they had. And score they did. Striker Raul  Ruidíaz opened the scoring just before halftime  Albert Rusnák crossed from the left flank that found the feet of Xavier Arreaga, who dropped a pass down to Ruidíaz, whose shot took a deflection off a Pumas defender and bounced into the back of the net.

DOUBLE DELIGHT

After some jostling between the two sides to start the second half Ruidiaz found the back of the Pumas net in the 80th minute to register the brace and give a commanding Sounders 2-0 lead. Sounders captain Nicolas Lodeiro sent Sounder nation into Nirvana when he made it 3-0. Lodeiro rifled home a point shot after a Morris shot deflected off the post right to his feet.

Last night’s sellout crowd of 68,741 broke the all-time Concacaf Champions League Final attendance record for a standalone match. The Seattle fans that packed Lumen Field surpassed the crowd of 66,208 that watched the 2014-2015 Semifinal second leg between Club América and Herediano at Estadio Azteca.
