The Seattle Mariners made another slew of roster moves Thursday afternoon. Per a team press release, the Mariners selected LHP Hector Santiago and recalled LHP Daniel Zamora from TRiple-A Tacoma. Sent down to the Rainiers were RHP Wyatt Mills ( post-game May 26) and RHP Yohan Ramirez also post-game on May 26th. Right-handed pitcher Sam Delaplane was designated for assignment. The Mariners’ big league roster is now at 40 players.
GRATEFUL FOR SECOND OPPORTUNITY
For Santiago, the journey back up to the leagues took longer than expected but it represents a second chance. The 33-year old Santiago was signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on May 5 and assigned to Triple-A Tacoma on May 6. In 3 starts with the Rainiers this season, the left-hander is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA (7 ER, 14.0 IP) with 5 walks and 22 strikeouts.
The 6-foot lefty made his Major League debut with the Chicago White Sox on July 6, 2011, and has made 257 MLB appearances (139 starts) with Chicago-AL (2011-13, ’18-19), Los Angeles-AL (2014-16), Minnesota (2016-17) and New York-NL (2019). In his career, Santiago is 47-50 with a 4.14 ERA (424 ER, 920.2 IP) with 850 hits allowed, 429 walks, and 826 strikeouts.
Santiago was originally selected by Chicago-AL in the 30th round of the 2006 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Northwest Florida State University.
