Washington Huskies Game With California Golden Bears Cancelled Due to Covid-19 Test Results

Washington Huskies head coach Jimmy Lake will have to wait one more week for his coaching debut. The Huskies Saturday night game at Cal has be canceled and declared a non-contest.

The League issued a press release announcing the cancellation.

“The Pac-12 has approved a request from Cal to cancel Washington at Cal football game scheduled for November 7.  This decision was made under the Pac-12’s football game cancellation policy due to Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship players available for the game as a result of a positive football student-athlete COVID-19 case and the resulting isolation of additional football student-athletes under contact tracing protocols.  Under Conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest.  The health and safety of our student-athletes and all those connected to Pac-12 football programs will continue to be our number one priority.”

LOW NUMBERS

Wednesday afternoon the Cal Athletic Department announced that one of its players had tested positive for Covid-19.   After Cal held a limited practice and some drills were not doable due to low numbers Saturday’s contest was put in jeopardy.  Cal then requested and received the conference’s approval to go ahead with the cancellation.

HUSKY STATEMENT

The cancellation means  Lakes  head coaching debut will be pushed  back one week.  The Huskies are scheduled to take on  Oregon State at Husky Stadium on Saturday November 14th at 8:00pm PT.  UW Director of Athletic Jen Cohen issued a statement  on the Cancellation of Saturdays game.

“Our students, coaches and staff have put in an incredible amount of hard work to get to this point and we are deeply disappointed they won’t have the opportunity to compete Saturday in Berkeley. I’m also disappointed for Husky Nation, they have been so patient and supportive, and we know they couldn’t wait to cheer on our Dawgs this weekend. With that said, the policies and protocols developed by the Pac-12, local and state officials placed the health and safety of students, coaches and staff at the forefront. We will now turn our attention to next week and start our preparations for Oregon State.”
