The Seattle Sounders picked the worst time to have a bad day at the office. The Sounders (10-5-5,35 points) three game win streak was snapped by a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids ( 6-6-4, 22 points )Sunday night in Colorado. The dropped points saw the Rave Green tumble from first to third in the Western Conference Standings. The Sounders are one point behind second place Sporting Kansas City (11-6-3 36 pts) and three points behind first place Portland Timbers( 11-5-5, 38pts). The Sounders have placed one less game than the Timbers.
COSTLY LACKLUSTER START
The Rapids took advantage of a lethargic Sounders team in the 11th minute on their first quality attack of the game, when a cross from Sam Vines found the head of Andre Shinyashiki, who was able to head it into the right side of the net. The Sounders found some energy and equalized in the 22nd minute when a Cristina Roldan cross found the feet of a wide open Jordan Morris who taped it in for the equalizer.
UNABLE TO SUSTAIN ENERGY
After the equalizer the Sounders let their foot of the pedal and went back to their pedestrian play for the remainder of the half. Needing a victory to keep their playoffs hopes alive the Rapids pushed forward. The result was the go ahead goal three minutes before the halftime break. The Rapids Keegan Rosenberry right footed a deflected corner kick into the back of the Sounders goal for the goa ahead score. The Rapids continued pressing in the second half and secured all three points in the 75th minute.
POST GAME NOTES
- Sunday’s loss moves Seattle’s all-time regular season record vs. the Rapids to 18-7-2, including a 7-5-1 mark on the road.
- With his Sunday start, Stefan Frei recorded his 300th regular season start in MLS. This number is inclusive of both his five seasons with Toronto FC and the past seven campaigns with Sounders FC. - Including both regular season play and the MLS Cup Playoffs, midfielder Gustav Svensson made his 100th all-time appearance for Sounders FC Sunday . The Swede originally joined Seattle in January of 2017 from the Chinese Super League, and he has gone on to become a midfield anchor for the Rave Green.
- Following his goal in the 22nd minute of play, Jordan Morris now has nine goals on the season, just one behind team leader Raúl Ruidíaz. Morris is also just one strike away from equaling his single-season high scoring mark (10 goals in 2019). He also has seven assists on the season.
