Sounders Crushed 5-1 by Whitecaps, Playoff Hopes in Peril

An embarrassing  5-1 shock loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps (18-7-8, 61 pts) left the Seattle Sounders (11-10-12, 43 pts) playoff lives in peril.  After the loss to the Whitecaps, the Sounders’ playoff hopes are no longer in their hands.

MUST WIN GAME

To have any chance of making the postseason, the Sounders have to beat LAFC in the regular season at Lumen Field on November 7th and have things fall their way. After today’s loss, the Sounders are now 9th in the Western Conference. The Rave Green are tied with the Colorado Rapids on points.

The Rapids have a -1 goal difference, which is less than the Sounders’ -3  goal difference.  One point behind the Sounders, Real Salt Lake is tied with the Sounders at 42 points.  A win over the Western Conference’s top team would have put the Sounders in the driver’s seat for a postseason berth.

LACK OF FIGHT FROM THE GET GO

A lack of intensity, determination, and grit saw the Whitecaps kick the Sounders’ backside up and down the pitch Sunday afternoon. The embarrassment was in the scoreline, and the shock was the lack of fight in the Sounders.  With the Western Conference sawed up, the Whitecaps had nothing to play for but pride.  Clearly, the Whitecaps have a lot of pride in who they are.

The game’s first goal came with just under two minutes into the contest. Bruno Caicedo’s cross to an unmarked Brian White, who headed the perfectly lofted ball past Sounders goalkeeper Andrew Thomas, gave the home side the dream start. A Shell-shocked and lethargic Sounders side barely had time to process what happened before the Whitecaps doubled the lead seven minutes later.  The Whitecaps’ Edier Ocampo beat a flat-footed Nouhou on the right side and slotted a perfect slide-rule pass into the Sounders’ goal box. An opportunistic Ryan Gauld pounced on the pass and rifled it past a hapless Thomas to double the Whitecaps’ lead.

KNOCKOUT PUNCH IN THE FIRST HALF

The Whitecaps continued to push the ball down the pitch against a lifeless Sounders team that had the lion’s share of possession at 53% but was unable to muster any real chances. As has been the issue with the Sounders in their five-game winless streak (two draws), there is a lack of off-ball runs, creativity, guile, and execution in the final third. The Sounders managed just one shot on goal in the first half. The Whitecaps had four shots on target.  Three of the four shots were goals. The home side put the game out of reach in the first half with Mathias Laborda’s header two minutes before halftime.  The goal gave the home side a  3-0 advantage as the sides went into the halftime break.

BRIAN SCHMETZER SENDS A MESSAGE

Safe to assume that Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer gave his team the old hair dryer treatment with a few choice words. In addition, Schmetzer showed his disappointment with four halftime substitutions.  Kalani Rienze was subbed off for Paul Arriola, Jesus Ferreira made for Sebastian Gomez, Stuart Hawkins replaced Nouhou, and Synder Brunell made way for Hasani Dotson. The Whitecaps continued their onslaught on the Sounders, who were searching for a foothold. While the Sounders searched for a foothold, the home side knew exactly how it wanted to attack: straight at the belly of the Sounders’ defense.

DONE AND DUSTED

In the 53rd minute, White recorded a brace when his left-footed shot slid past  Thomas for the 4-0 lead. The Sounders finally showed some grit and pride in the  62nd minute on Jordan Morris’s breakaway goal to narrow the deficit to 4-1

Any hopes of a miraculous comeback by the  Sounders were quickly dashed eight minutes later. Midfielder Aleksa Cvetković’s foot-footed blast from the center of the box restored the Whitecaps’ four-goal cushion and put the game to bed.

BIG TAKE AWAY

Plenty of blame goes around in this horrific loss by the Sounders.  Whenever a team loses a game, the coach and players share the blame.  How much blame depends on each game. On Sunday,  it was 90% the players’ fault and 10% the coaching staff. The players were heartless in their effort. Yes, they managed to get one back, but it was too little, too late.  The Sounders are a veteran-laden team sprinkled with a young core.  There is no excuse for a lack of intensity when your playoff future is on the line, and you are playing your Cascadia rival, whom you beat earlier in the year.
