Seahawks Mike Macdonald on facing the Niners, ” They are a good team”

While some of it is genuine coach speak, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald was close to the truth when he told the media how complete the San Francisco offense was. The 4-0 Niners have the fourth-ranked offense, averaging 389.7 yards per game. San Francisco is led by quarterback Brock Purdy, who is having another stellar season. Purdy has completed 79 of 113 passes for 1,007 yards and 11 touchdowns, with just one interception.

“Good team football; they’re running the ball, they’re staying ahead of schedule, limited third downs. When they throw it, they’re playing on time. There haven’t been many occasions where there are people unaccounted for for the quarterback, and when there has been, he’s gotten rid of the ball,’ said Macdonald.

“ We spoke about how he’s been able to extend plays and take care of the football and still have that element of creativity and playmaking that keeps the ball moving forward. They’ve been doing a great job.”

Numbers-wise, Sunday’s game will match the Niners’ 7th-ranked offense against the Seahawks’ top-ranked defense. Both teams know each other’s tendencies and personnel. Beyond Purdy, the Niners’ offense is led by wide receiver Mike Evans, who has 17 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

SEAHAWKS DEFENSE WILL NEED  TO PLAY DISCIPLINED DEFENSE

The Seahawks defense will need to keep its upward trajectory by playing disciplined football and cutting down on penalties. In last Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Seahawks defense had 14 penalties for 150 yards. On the flip side, the defense had a season-high four sacks,  two interceptions, and 10 quarterback hits, which was also a season high.

The positive numbers will need to continue; the negative penalty numbers will need to change quickly against the Niners, who will be looking to exact some revenge for last season’s Divisional  Playoff loss to the Seahawks.

CAN THE RUN GAME CONTINUE?

In their  30-23 win over the Chargers, the Seahawks rushed for 138 yards, which is the team’s second-highest total behind the season-high 162 yards against the Arizona Cardinals in Week Two. Despite the 138 yards in the Chargers game, the Seahawks kept searching for options to bolster the backfield.  Former All-Pro running back Joe Mixon had a tryout with the team on Monday and left town without a contract. On Wednesday, the team announced it signed Robert Henry Jr. from the Washington Commanders’ practice squad and Dontae MacMillan to the practice squad.

Both players were undrafted free agents in this season’s draft. Henry was with the Commanders and MacMillan with the Baltimore Ravens. Henry was spotted returning punts, and he told the media he was living in the playbook to prepare for Sunday’s game with the Chargers. An efficient running back will be needed against a Niners team that is ranked 11th in run defense and allowing  99 yards a game.
