Revamping the Seahawks’ Run Game under Brian Fleury

It was the coordinators to talka to the media after Wednesday’s training camp practice. Special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh, offensive coordinator Brian Fleury, and defensive coordinator Aden Darde spoke to the media for the first time since the start of training. Of the three, Fleury is the new kid on the block. The former Niners run game coordinator and tight ends coach was hired in February to replace the departed Clint Kubiak, who is now head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

CONTINUITY BUT A CHANGE

In his 23 years of coaching, Fleury has coached on both sides of the ball. Early in his coaching career, Leury was the Buffalo Bills’ defensive quality control coach in 2013, then moved to the Browns organization, where he coached linebackers from 2014-2015. From 2016-2018, Fleruy was a research analyst for the Dolphins before joining the Niners in 2019 as the team’s Defensive Quality Control coach. The following year, Fleury moved across the scrimmage line and became the Niners’ offensive control coach. From 2022 to 2024, Fleury was the tight ends coach.

In 2025, Fleru was promoted to Run Game Coordinator and Tight Ends coach. His understanding of defenses and how to attack was one of the unique traits that impressed head coach Mike Macdonald . The other trait Fleury has, similar to McDonald, is his attention to detail and ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.

NEW JOB TITLE

This is Fleury’s first assignment as an offensive coordinator.

“Obviously, you’re overseeing the entire group. I’m used to installing to the entire group but now it’s just having to make sure that I’m paying attention to every aspect of every drill, said Fleury when asked about the difference between a being a positional coach and coordinator. “There’s times as a position coach where you can hunker down in your bunker and focus on your own guys and now, I don’t have that luxury anymore.”

Part of Fleury’s task will be to add creativity and efficiency to the Seahawks’ run game, which was ranked tenth in rushing ( 123.3 yards per game ) but lost its top two running backs. Super Bowl MVP Ken Walker III signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Zach Charbonnet finished the season on IR after sustaining a season-ending knee injury during the Seahawks Divisional Round playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers. George Holani stepped in for Charbonnet and is not competing for the starting running back position. The Seahawks selected Jadarian Price in the first round to bolster the run game. The rebuilding of the Seahawks’ run game has been a work in progress.

“I want us to be better. We are moving in the right direction. We have been efficient in practice, but I see things through a different lens. It’s not the success of the play on the practice field,” said Fleury when asked to assess the team’s run game . I’m looking at everyone’s alignment and technique and there’s a lot of room for growth there. Not to say that we’re doing poorly, but I expect that to be an extremely reliable portion of our game, and it’s not there yet.”

WORK IN PROGRESS

While he would like to be further along when it comes to the run game. Fleury is satisfied with the foundation he and his coaches have been able to build in the Seahawks’ new offensive run scheme.

“I would say a good chunk of the foundation is installed. The challenge we face is that we’re going against one style of defense every day, and so much of the package is built to attack different styles. There’s really no point in putting it in, because it won’t work or be executed properly, given what we’re seeing on a daily basis. But that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to get to Tennessee and use some of those other pieces.”

CONTINUITY IN THE FRONT FIVE

One offensive unit Fleury will not have to tinker with is the offensive line. All five starters, tackles Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, guards Anthony Bradford and Grey Zabel, and center Jalen Sundell return. Having all five return brings continuity and a synergy to Fleury’s installation plan.

It’s an extremely rare situation to have all five starters returning, especially from a Super Bowl team. I’m walking into a good situation. I’ve worked with John Benton before – he does a phenomenal job of coaching that group. The cohesion that they already have makes it easy to implement stuff, ” said Fleury. “When you do realize that an adjustment needs to be made, they are so used to working with each other and communicating that adjustments happen lightning fast. That’s a nice advantage to that situation.”
