Mariners work their trade magic again by landing Taylor Ward

The Mariners get the right-handed bat they need, acquiring Taylor Ward from the Orioles for Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling.

Last season’s trade deadline proved to be a successful one for Jerry Dipoto and the Mariners, as they snagged Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suárez and Caleb Ferguson. Well, it’s now shaping up to be similarly positive this time around. After first shipping off Luis Castillo’s remaining salary, they’ve now snagged the right-handed bat they need, who can hit lefties.

As first reported by Daniel Kramer of MLB.com, the Mariners have acquired Taylor Ward from the Orioles, in exchange for reliever Alex Hoppe and minor leaguers Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling. In one respect the return haul is worth it, with neither Moore or Kreiling featured among the M’s top 30 pitchers according to MLB Pipeline. However, Ward is effectively a rental player, with him owed the balance of of a $12.18 million salary for this season before becoming a free agent.

Overall though, this is a win for the Mariners, who were in dire need of what Ward can offer given the lineup’s considerable woes versus left-handed pitching this season. Ahead of Monday’s slate of games, the M’s rank second-last in both batting average and OPS against southpaws. As for right-handed batters specifically against lefties, they rank 28th and 25th respectively in the same categories.

We appreciate Ward’s overall hitting this season might not jump out at the page per se, although the Mariners will happily take a .246 batting average and .730 OPS in their lineup. However, against southpaws specifically in 2026, he’s hitting .269 with a .839 OPS. This isn’t a case of short-term success either, with a career .280 batting average and .827 OPS versus left-handed pitching over nine seasons.

Taylor Ward will also bring some much-needed patience to the M’s lineup

One other thing which really stands out about Ward at the plate is his patience, with him ranking in the 100th percentile in Chase% and 98th percentile for BB%. Mariners fans are well aware of the team’s penchant for swinging and striking out at a high rate in recent seasons. It’s also worth noting he ranks in the 95th percentile for Squared-Up %.

Ward has mostly been used as a left fielder in recent seasons, but is capable of playing in left field and as DH, while also having limited experience at first and third base. Hollander released a statement not long after the trade. He said:

“We are excited to add Taylor to our lineup. He has proven to be a consistent performer that is among the very best in the league at getting on base. We are thrilled to be adding a player of his caliber to our team.”

It will be interesting to see if the Mariners have any more moves lined up between now and 3:00 pm PT on Monday. As per The Seattle Times, Randy Arozarena is likely now staying, but apparently the M’s are still open to potentially moving George Kirby of Emerson Hancock. Irrespective, as things stand, we consider this another successful trade deadline for Dipoto, Hollander and the rest of the front office.
