Sounders FC Looking to Stay Consistent in Scoring

The Seattle Sounders attack was unleashed in the team’s dramatic come-from-behind 3-2 win over  Western Conference leaders San Jose  Quakes, Wednesday night at Lumen Field.

The Rave Green gave up the opening goal, tied the score on an Albert Rusnack penalty conversion just before halftime. Take a 2-1 lead minutes into the second half on an exquisite goal by Jesus Ferreira. The Quakes leveled the game in the 69th minute to set the stage for Osaze De Rosario’s dramatic game-winner in the 89th minute.

EXCITING  FINISH

While the score line made for an exciting and entertaining match for the fans, Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer would rather have seen his team put the game away when leading.

The other asks for Schmetzer to continue his team’s scoring ways. The three goals scored against the Quakes mark the fourth time this year the Sounders have scored more than three goals. In all four games, the Sounders have walked away with all three points.

  CAN THE SOUNDERS BE CONSISTENT

The numbers prove that the Sounders can score, and all three strikers have scored a goal after Schmetzer’s call out for someone to grab the striker role and run with it.  Schmetzer has now taken a conciliatory tone, saying that as long as the team scores and wins, it doesn’t matter where the goals are coming from.  The team’s top three scorers are winger Paul Rothrock with four goals, and midfielders Cristian Roldan and Albert Rusnack with three each.

De Rosario leads all strikers with two goals. The Sounders as a team have scored  17 goals and are tied with the Houston Dynamos for 23rd in scoring. Be consistent in scoring and climb the scoring chart. The Sounders will need to be creative, aggressive, and have an unwavering belief that the ball will go in the net.

MEANINGFUL POSSESSION

When the Sounders win the possession battle, something they have done in most of their games, it must have meaning and purpose.  Too often, the Sounders attack from one side of the field while neglecting the other.  Early in the season, the Sounders attacked from the left, using Rothrock’s speed and ability to cut inside.

With teams making an effort to shut down the left side, the Sounders have attacked from the right side in the last several games. Such was the case in Wednesday’s win. What’s needed is a balanced attack from the left and right side, with the middle infielders switching the play from side to side.
