The unfortunate war between the United States and Iran continues to put a dark cloud on the FIFA 2026 World Cup. War is not a good a thing, and it’s fair to say football and war are not a good match. Soon-to-be-renamed Lumen Field, due to a FIFA advertising statue, is scheduled to host several six-match games.
Seattle Stadium, as it will be called during the World Cup Tournament, will host four group stage games: Belgium vs Egypt on June 15th, USA vs Australia on June 19th, Qatar, and a team to be determined on June 24th . Round of 32 knockout game is scheduled for July 1st, and the round of 16 match is scheduled on July 6th.
OFF-FIELD ISSUES AFFECTING CONTEST
The June 26th match between Egypt and Iran is where all the controversy lies. The first issue with the scheduled match is that the Seattle FIFA 2026 local organizing committee dubbed the game the Pride match before the opponents were announced.
The draw placed Egypt and Iran in slot. Issue number one is that both countries have laws criminalizing LGBTQ+ behavior, and formally complained, demanding the removal of pride-related events. FIFA has yet to comment on the Pride Match designation.
BIGGER ISSUE
On February 28th, the United States and Israel launched a coordinated attack on Iran, which started a conflict between the three governments. That conflict continues to this day. On March 12, US President Donald Trump issued a statement saying that the Iranian soccer team was welcome to participate in the 2026 World Cup but should skip the tournament for their own safety.
The latest news concerning the Iranian soccer teams participating in the game was on April 22nd. The Athletic reported that an envoy to Donald Trump claims he has asked the U.S. president and FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, to replace Iran with Italy at this summer’s World Cup. The report prompted a swift response from the Iranian government.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports made an announcement about the full preparedness of our national soccer team for presence in the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., by the order of the minister,” Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohejerani told Iran’s state TV on Wednesday.
FIFA has consistently said Iran will stick to the World Cup game schedule decided last December, and refused to negotiate any suggestion of playing the team’s games in Mexico.
IRANIAN NATIONAL TeAM SCHEDULE
The Iranian pro soccer league has been shut down during the conflict, causing the national team to practice in Turkey before making their way to their US base camp in Tucson, Arizona, no later than June 10th. The team’s first game is June 15th against New Zealand at LA’s SoFi Stadium.
