Sounders pull a classic “smash and grab” 1-0 win over Dynamos

Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer rolled out a cautious lineup for his team’s match with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday.  Looming for the Sounders was Wednesday  Leg One  Concacaf  Champions Cup with Liga MX side Tigres in Mexico City. In addition, several players were returning from International Duty. All those variables added to a cautious start, resulting in a classic smash-and-grab strategy 1-0 win that saw the Sounders leave Houston with all three points and their fifth clean sheet in eight games.

 CONSERTIVE  START

A 30th-minute weather delay added to the pre-game drama. Once the match kicked off, Houston forward Mateusz Bogusz nearly gave the home side the dream start when he darted inside the Sounders goal box only to see his shot sail wide of the post inside the first minute.  The play was a wake-up call for the visitors who recalled their pregame assignments.

The Sounders stayed compact in a defensive shell and kept the Dynamo’s lethal front line at bay. In addition to being resolute in defense, the Sounders were looking to maintain long, sustained possession.

“ I think everybody’s pitching in. You know, at times you have to defend in a low block, and at times you have a lot of success on the ball. At times, it becomes really difficult, but I think our team is so connected, so glued together,” said Cristian Roldan in his post-game interview. I keep reiterating how close this team is, and I really think that that’s been a huge part of our success.
And it’s, you know, this tight-knit group that is willing to battle for each other when the time comes.”

GIVEAWAYS MAKING THINGS WORSE

The Sounders played resolute defense and kept the Dynamos’ Guilherme Augusto and Ezequiel Ponce from getting clear goal-scoring chances. Compounding the Sounders’ issues were their sloppy giveaways when they tried to play from the back and the midfield. Nouhou made a goal-saving block in the 8th minute on a  Guilherme shot inside the box.

The Sounders’ best chance of the half came in the 19th minute when a nifty give-and-go between Jesus Ferreira and Danny Musovski atop the Dynamo goal box unleashed a shot from Ferreira that forced a diving save from Dynamo keeper Jonathan Bond. The  Dynamo continued to attack, and Guilherme showed his brilliance in the 30th minute when he slalomed through the Sounders defensive left side and forced a point-blank save from Andrew Thomas.

The half ended goalless, with the Dynamo winning the shot battle 8-1. The Sounders won the possession battle 57% to 43%.

ANOTHER SLOW START

Similar to the first half, the Dynamo nearly took the lead seconds into the second half after another Sounders giveaway. And yes, it was that man again, Guilherme. The Brazilian received the ball from Ponce, accelerated down the left side of the goal box, and forced a chest save from the onrushing Thomas.  The Sounders looked like they would draw first blood when Cristian Roldan’s pass down the right flank found a streaking Arriola, who switched to Musovski.  The Macedonian international was unable to track the ball down and a get a shot on goal.

The two sides retreated to their respective halves, with one side looking like they wanted to score.   They did, of course, but lacking from the two sides was a final clinical pass that opened up the opposing defenses.  As a result, there was a lull in the game from the 53rd minute to the 61st minute. At the 61st minute mark, Schmetzer made three substitutions, hoping to tip the game in his favor.  Albert Rusnak replaced Ferriera, Musovski made way for Jordan Morris, and  Hassani Dotson replaced  Paul  Arriola.

MORE ATTACK MINDED AND LESS TURNOVERS

The substitutions by Schmetzer saw the Sounders continue their dominance of the possession battle with increased accurate passing. Rusnak linked the midfield and the block, while Dotson took the pressure off Cristian Roldan.  Morris’s ability to get the ball downfield and hold the ball forced the Dynamo to play defense. The Sounders drew first blood in the 83rd minute when  Kolan Kossa Rienze’s cross found Morris inside the Dynamos goal box. The Sounders’ all-time leading goal scorer flicked the ball to an onrushing Rothrock for the game winner and his fifth of the season.

“ It felt like a smash and grab, because, look, they were on top of us with, Guilherme is the real deal, he’s as good as advertised. Ponze and Bogusz Vogic. I mean, they’ve got a really good front three,’ said Schmetzer. But, you know, there was one time that Kelani looked like he struggled in the attacking part of the field a little bit, but he delivered the ball, and Jordan came on as the sub as the number nine. You know, he gets up, and he gets his head on it 1st and all doing what Paul does at the back post, had to clean it up a little bit, because that wasn’t an easy finish.”

WHAT IT WAS

The win marked a fifth shoutout for the Sounders in their last five away games and, more remarkably, Cristian Roldan’s 400th game as a Seattle Sounder.

“I mean, look, I played in a lot of games. It’s at this point, right?
It comes very naturally. Um, there are fewer butterflies than I once had. But, you know, for me, I think what I enjoy the most is, you know, careers are short,’ said Roldan. “Health is so important to be able to sustain a lot of games. And so being available, for me, um, is the most important thing. So, taking care of my body, making sure I sleep a whole lot.
Um, honestly, that’s that’s what, what put me on the field, uh, to be honest. And being around the group, careers are short; you never know what’s gonna happen. I’m just enjoying every moment, still loving the game, and I hope I can play a few more.
