Jedd Fisch is expecting competitive battles as he enters his third year as the Huskies’ head football coach. The safest position to enter the spring football session is quarterback. While quarterback Demond Williams’ job is safe, Fisch has some exceptions for the two-year starter.
COMPETITIVE BATTLES
”Yeah. I think the biggest battles, um, we’re gonna see, I think we’re gonna see a great battle with Champ Taulealea and Kodi Green really competing for that guard spot. Soane Faasolo Had a fantastic off-season, so it’ll be fun to see what Soane does at tackle. He’s had his best offseason by far. We’ll see great competition at running back. There’s no doubt about it with putting Jordan Washington, Quaid Carr, Ansu Sanoe, Brian Bonner Jr., and, you know, there’s a lot of guys that’ve never done it… with us, so that’ll be fun to watch that competition.”
DEFENSIVE BATTLES
The Huskies will retain all of their defensive coaches with the exception of Kirkland Parker, who moved to North Texas to become the safeties coach, according to Fisch.
“Defensively, we have all of our coaches back. So, with Coach Walters and the whole defensive staff, uh, Coach Richardson, Coach Kalfusi, Coach Van Horn, Coach Odom, Coach Mays, all returning, um, with Kirkland Parker being the only one that is not returning, and that was because he had the opportunity to be the safeties coach at North Texas, so he wished him the best of luck.”
As for the defensive battles, Fisch and defensive coordinator Ryan Walter will be keeping a sharp eye on the defensive line and linebacker units.
Defensively, really looking forward to seeing what Zaydrius Rainey-Sale can do. at edge, as an outside linebacker.” He’s got a very multiple position value. I think we could see him at all different spots in our defense. So, looking forward to seeing what he’s gonna bring.” Said, Fisch.” Great to have Isaiah Ward back, health-wise. He’s in a great place, so it’s gonna be great to watch him, uh, compete, see what Logan George can bring to the table. I think that Logan’s gonna be one of those guys who does a lot of great things for us. Linebacker battles are gonna be awesome with Logan Jacob Manu, and Zaydrius You’ve got three dudes that are gonna get after it at linebacker. So that should be great competition there. “

NONE PARTICIPANTS
Several players will not be participating in the spring session, but looking to be ready for summer camp, according to Fisch.
“Buddha AL- Uqdah, Rashon Clark, Deuce Davis, Cade Eldridge, Blaise La Vista, Jaden Lamar, Kai McClendon, and Trey Cooley, will all be rehabbing through spring ball, and they will be able to participate and return to play protocols,’ said Fisch. They’ll be able to be out there for workouts, but they will not be participating in any of our spring practices. They will all be on schedule to be cleared for training camp. So all of them will be participating in training camp.”
HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR WILLIAMS
Quarterback Demond Williams is back after a declaring he was leaving the program, then did an about-face and returned for his second year as a starter. With the situation in the past, Fisch has high expectations for Williams in the upcoming season.
“ Football, knowledge, football, acumen, understanding the system better than ever before. He’s really committed to understanding defenses and letting the games slow down for him. Going into spring last year, he was a three-game starter, going into spring, this series, a 16-game starter,” said Fisch. “ So there’s a huge difference in what you know and what you’ve experienced to be able to have a lot of this film to look at from the season and be able to go through, Hey, remember this game? Remember this opportunity. Remember what happened here?
“His ability to top the game. has really improved. Uh, weight. We needed to get his weight up. He’s done a great job there of getting his body, body mat up. Um, that was an important part of this off-season. Leadership. It’s now your team. You’re no longer a first-year starter. Uh, that makes a big difference. So he’s grown in a lot of those areas.”
